E300 Turbodiesel intermittent turbo

Car has 70,000 miles on clock and has been utterly reliable, seemingly until rear shock absorbers were changed 2 weeks ago. Since that time, the turbo is OK for the first 15+ minutes or so, but then "disappears" until the car is stopped and switched off, whereupon, it goes back into operation.
The rear shock absorber thing may be coincedental, but there again, at the same time, probably when the shockers were replaced, the rear silencer box bracket on the right hand side seemed to have given up the ghost, allowing the box to hang down, until I had the bracket welded back on about 100 miles later. Could this have been relevant?
Any replies gratefully received. I shudder to think of the number of things that the MB dealers analyser could suggest need replacing....

Sound to me that you have got a sticking relay, which works when cold but sticks when hot. Switching off and on, clearly clears the fault unitl it gets hot again.
Has this on a petrol car some years ago. Obviously you will need to establish if there is a relay in the turbo circuit, and where the relay is sited.

If there is no relay in the system, then there must be a problem either with an electrical component which is heat sensitive, or possibly with a mechncial component which is sticking when hot.

If you have a local specialist on turbos, ( Not MB) give them a bell and describe your symptoms... often you will find, that they will say that it a fairly common fault with ..., which at least gives you a start point.

The Answer

Turns out after being put on an analyser, that one of the hoseclips connected to the intercooler had rusted, and was releasing the pressure. Replace one clip, tighten, and whoosh, back to full turbo. And a bill for only £55 (independent MB centre) If that had been my local MB main dealer here in Aylesbury, I am sure they would have hiked the bill up to hundreds of pounds - well, they always have in the past....

Didn't know the 300TD had an intercooler?????? I thought the pipe went from the turbo, under the engine, through the EGR valve and straight to the intake.......infact, I have always wondered wherther there were great efficiency gains to be had by fitting an intercooler........maybe I'm wrong and I've just got the wrong end of the stck........

E300TD does not exist - Mercedes have never built a car called a E300TD !

This car is a E300 Turbodiesel

(TD means diesel estate - NOT Turbodiesel)

My apologies......I meant 300 Turbodiesel. I remember when I changed the glow plugs on mine, removing the bottom tray and disconnecting the clamp on the EGR. I could have sworn the pipe led from the turbo directly to the EGR valve under the engine.....I didn't see any pipes going to an intercooler......but then I wasn't looking for it!

I shall have to go and have another looksee.

Has anyone ever done any tuning work on these engines then.....such as larger intercooler.....work on the fuelling etc. I understand that the engine produces something under 180 BHP which, I would imagine, makes it pretty understressed and just ripe for tweaking.......

Purely for my education, what should you call a 3 litre diesel estate E class if not an E300TD......( I fear getting lost in the world of semantics here!!!!!)

A little pedantic by Steve, but I understand that a "diesel estate E class" could well be a 1996 S210 without a turbo and by default, without an intercooler, whereas a 1998 E300 Turbodiesel estate would be as stated and being a S210 (as opposed to the same in a saloon being a "W210") which has a intercooler under the front valance.

I have seen the stated "S210" descibed as E300 TD and E300 DT which is obviousley an abreviation for "Turbo Diesel" and "Diesel Turbo" respectively but which, off course, is creating a two word title rather than what the badge on the rear of a "S210 E 300 Turbodiesel" states.

Does this help? Or are you anti-semantics? :)
