When I take my foot abruptly off the accelerator at slow speed - say less than 15mph - on my new 1995 E300D there is a "bump" noise from the back axle area.
Is this significant?

One often gets back lash in the pinion, but you do have all of the spiders on the prop shaft.

By jacking the car one side with the hand brake off and the car in P by turning the rear wheel backwards and forwards any back lash from the gearbox to the axel can be seen.

Estate or saloon?

It could be the propshaft doughnuts but my money is on the diff bushes being worn

There's rubber everywhere and it all wears so tracking it down may take a while and involve replacing a few things. I'd start with the diff mounts (top & bottom) and also look at prop doughnuts, engine & gearbox mounts and rear subframe leading bushes

If it's an estate with an aftermarket towbar it may be the exhaust box hitting one of the towbar mounts

Bump off back axle

I too was getting a 'bump' on my 1999 E300 TD estate. Turned out the driver's side rear lower hub bush was worn. If you jacked it up and took a crow bar to it and then flexed, you saw the movement. Done the job myself but it was labour, time and hammer thumping, intensive.

However, still getting a slight bump under the conditions you describle. Has never got worse or better in the last year, so just putting it down as a car characteristic, and since it passed an MOT last month, not worrying about it unless I see something falling off.

Hope this helps.

E300d axle

Many thanks to all for the advice.
Very impressive for a first time user.
It is an estate with towbar under the exhaust box.
I'll investigate further........
Thanks again

Rehanging the rear box with new rubbers may help a little but those towbars always seem to clonk. There should be a little rubber pad on the longitudinal mount under the box. Replacing that if it's missing may help a little too

Having had quite a few cars with these Witter bars I can say the factory Oris bars and the aftermarket Brink bars are superior
