I have been told by my garage that I need a new Diesel pump for my 1995 E300D. I know this is going to be ****** expensive but just so the guy doesnt have my pants down, does anybody know how much I should pay for a recon pump?

If you look on www.eurocarparts.com and enter your vehicle details (parts), then move down to engine parts>diesel pump parts, there are a few in there depending on exactly what model you have.

I saw two, one at £130, and another at £200, but I'm not certain which model you have. Not too expensive though, and I would imagine its a fairly simple DIY job.

That price is for a vacuum pump for the brakes not a diesel injection pump.
His car is a 300 diesel the pump in question would cost roughly 10X the price of the pump from euro and that would be to get it reconditioned.

Have you had a data read out,
Does your garage mean the fuel pump or the distributor injection pump,if its the fuel pump that unbolts from the distributor pump.
how did the car behave when it went wrong

If thats the price, I'd buy an entire car and strip it!

Do you mean the injection pump itself or are you talking about the diesel lift pump
Injection pumps are expensive you would be better trying to get a second hand one or putting your into a diesel specialist for an overhaul. If it’s the lift pump I cant see it being that expensive because its just a small mechanical pump to supply the injection pump.

To my experience, they will not be after more of your money than absolutely necessary. (I've used them several times over the last 20 years, always cheap and 100% honest)
Good luck

Hi Guys. Thanks for the replies. It is the injection pump that is the problem. Not the lift pump. The car is completely gutless. I know it is a heavy motor but I need to keep my foot pressed to the boards most of the time. Also, until it warms up, it is misfireing. I have replaced the heater plugs and used injector cleaner. If it is going to cost me a grand, then I will just put up with it for the time being

Gutless diesel

Have you correctly adjusted the throttle cable and the kickdown cable? If they're wrong the car will be as flat as a pancake

Is the EGR working OK? Does the valve close at about 2600 rpm then open again?

Does the car bang shifts or not? Lots of hydraulics on the late diesels and not all is what it seems

I had one that was as flat as anything & reported a rack sensor error on Star Diagnostics. I took it to the local diesel specialist and they adjusted the cables correctly and the car was transformed. Reason for the rack sensor error? No rack sensor fitted to the car...

I'd make 100% sure everything else is OK before throwing £1000 at it

Nigel,

Try taking the motor into a diesel specialist not an MB stealer or indie. They usually love stripping them down repairing/refurbishing - its their commercial background. It'll be a damn site cheaper than with the car fitters.

Do as all these people have said, Get it checked out by someone who knows
Bosch have a new program of deisel exchange parts. When you are sure it is the pump, ask Parts Co for a exchange price.
