My E300TD (W210) 1998 whines. It's definately coming from the engine bay. Now it's quite possible that it's a normal noise (just listen to any Peugeot -they all whine like mad) but as I have nothing to compare it against, I can't be sure. If it's not normal, I'm thinking that it maybe coming from the power steering. What do you all reckon? Do E300TDs normally whine or should I just hear the normal diesel engine noise?

Many thanks.

No - well mine doesn't.

Having said that, sorry, I've no idea why yours does!

My wifes E300TD never whined, the engine was one of the better aspects of the car. Advanced body corrosion was the worst. I have many tales to tell so if anyone is interested I will. Just ask!

It depends on what you mean by whining? All 300TDs do whine quietly. This is the serpentine belt and associated pulleys.
If you are talking about a loud whine heard from inside the car then that is unusual.
You refer to Peugeot diesels whining. That is due to timing belts being set too tight.

It's a whine that can be heard from inside the car. It does it in all gears, moving or stationary. Looks like I have a problem :( Anyone with an E300TD live in Sussex or Kent? I'd like to compare before I start my investigations.

E300 TD's are all auto so it won't be a clutch bearing.

My list of woe as requested by an earlier post can be found on general questions in reponse to a post regarding bodywork claims for W210. It is too long to reproduce here again!

Only a transmission fluid and filter change (which I had done by Andy so no worries there). Whine rises and falls with engine rpm whether the car is moving or not.

whine

Try removing the poly belt and run engine only for short time, if whine still present sounds like g box primary pump. If whine has gone then something on belt train whining :- pas pump, waterpump, alternator, AC pump
