Hi folks - i am think of buying a 2003 E320cdi with 44,000 miles with service history etc. Sold my C250td a few weeks back. Now that we are fast approaching £6.50 a gallon for diesel does anyone out there know what these 320 diesels return on a gallon. I do about 50/50 town & country driving.

Also - are there any specific problems with this model. I have heard that the later mercs in general are prone to the electronics going a bit hay-wire at times - but then what dosen't these days.

Cheers

Why bother buying a car mate? Why dont you go and look at a Rickshaw or a bicycle? Or better still a donkey. We will all have to convert sooner or later....... the way things are going.

You will get around 35mpg - however, drive quickly any this will drop to 30mpg

Even at current fuel prices, fuel only accounts for 50-60% of the running costs excluding depreiation.

Hi,
Great engine with no real issues. (if its a 211 chassis check for valeo radiator issues, do a search on the forum for info)

MPG:
Worst - 25 to 30 (short journeys)
Ave - 30 to 35 (mixed town and country)
Best - 35 to 45 (A roads and motorway with a light foot)

I've seen 46 on the onboard computer but I think it is inaccurate by 10%

The trade rate the inline 6 as the best diesel engine of its generation.

If fuel is a real issue the 220CDi is cheaper to run but without the wow factor.

Hope this helps!

Out of curiosity, as I have a C250TD, how much did you sell your C250TD for and was this private or to a dealer.
In addition what was the age, spec and mileage
Cheers

Jenson - it was Sept 1997 with 135k miles, black, elegance, good condition - it was a greal auld machine and I sold it private for £1900. When I read through some of the issues on the later Mercs, for example, valeo radiator issues, sort of half sorry that i did sell it. Had the usual problems re not starting when the nose was pointing down hill over night but a 50p "o" ring in the shut off valve cured that.

I was wondering has anyone using this forum ever signed up to the Car Plan insurance, if yes any comments.

I ran an October 2003 E 320CDI for 3 years and about 43,000 miles. It was really just run in when I parted with it and gave me no faults during the time I had it. I never saw less than 38 mpg and generally averaged 43-45 on the Motorway at around 70 mph (honest, officer). The car is really geared for motorway driving and has "long legs", but even zooming about on A and B roads I never managed to get less than an overall 38 mpg, counting the fuel and the miles brim to brim - often doing 650 miles on a tank. At 60 mph on the variable speed limit section of the M25 I have seen 54 mpg on the computer, but I accept that may have been optimistic.
I never experienced the flat batteries that have been reported elsewhere when leaving the car whilst overseas.
Incidentally, my chums who run a chaufeur drive service, principally from Warwickshire to Heathrow and Gatwick, run E220 CDIs and got virtually identical fuel consumption.

Yes I have and no don't bother. Not worth the paper its printed on. Do a search - several discussions on the subject and non complementary.

Thats interesting, I get similar MPG's to that in my E220cdi.

But I have heard stories of 20mpg in town for an E320cdi, 35 in normal A-B road driving, and 45 if gentle.

The e220 and e320 cdi's will be about the same mpg on average, because the 220 whilst being more economical it has to work harder to move the car and therefore offsets the difference.

This is the same as the 230 v6 petrols and 350 v6 petrols in the c class, even out to same mpg over time.

I've heard this theory before with other models of car.

I was given this information when I had a 3.0i X5 and I was told the 4.4i was no worse on fuel and in some cases better as the 4.4i engine wouldn't work as hard to pull the car along. All in theory true...

In practice the 4.4i car was much heavier fuel, it was only Mway miles was it as good as its predecesor.I got 25.6 from the 3 litre car, the 4.4 would struggle for 20mpg.

I am suprised this isn't the case with the diesel E classes. I do not believe that I'd improve on, or get the same 43mpg average from the E320cdi. I'd expect mid 30's and late 30's on a run.
