I have a bit of a stupid question here, I bought an e320 coupe with the 5 speed box but I'm convince its not going into 5th gear, I cant find the ratio in the handbook, can one of you kind chaps tell me what rev the car would be doing at 40mpg in 4th and 5th gear please? my car is showing about 2k rpm but when I push the gear change to 4th nothing happen. From stop the gear changes 4 times but I'm sure the book says it doesnt go into 1st gear unless you floored the eccelerator. I would assume the 5th gear is like an overdrive ratio since the display shows the same as my 4 geared ce300

Are you positive its got the five speed box - most came, as mine did (a saloon) with the four speed auto.
These are compartively low geared in top, which is one of the reasons why they are such a delight to drive, with an instant response from merely a touch of the toe on the throttle - quick, even before it changes down.

If you push it from d accross to 4 and nothing happens it sounds like its probably in 5th, but has missed 4th.. this isnt that un-common, I have had one like this myself, its better than it not going into 5th

thats what I thought but pushing it acaross is suppose to force it into 4th. If I knew what the ratio was then I would be certain that its in 5th and not stuck in 4th..
Thanks for the quick response by the way and a happy new year to you all

The gearshift indicate that its 5 speed and I did check the specks on that russian site, The previous owner said he change the oil and filter and its got a small leak, It was a bag of nail but I was hoping to do it up next year rectifying all the niggles and convert it to lpg, I got it at a good price.

We had the 5 spd box in a 124 estate, and it felt similar, you won't feel the 5 gears in use as 1st is only for fast take off, but blimey is that fast, my 320 coupe with the 4 speed wouldn't live with on initial take off.

Sometimes i do wish that the 124's had come with a proper 5 speed overdrive box, my pick is only doing about 2200rpm at 80, the car is over 3000rpm, maybe give or take a bit, its a week since i used her (the joys of having a bit of time off, not tempting fate mind you the way work is at present),
but as already said the real joy of this car is the beautiful cruising ability that with just a flick of the right foot will transform instantly into a very capable high performer well able to keep up with almost anything bar the very quickest of the latest.

That take off with kick down into 1st is something that I will never forget, its unbelievably quick, my children still comment on that some 18 year later
