Hi all, I've got a '93 E320 cab, every time I pull up in drive or when I'm in reverse it stalls, feels as if the clutch/gearbox isn't disengaging or as if the ECU isn't compensating for the extra drag when in gear and stationary, I've tried cleaning the MAF and the throttle body/butterfly even tried bringing the idle up a bit to see what happens and when its ticking over at 1500 rpm it still bogs down when put in reverse or drive.

Could this be either the idle control valve or the lambda sensor?

If not possibly some sort of switch in the gearbox?

I've checked the gearbox ATF and that seems fine, running out of answers so any help would be of great help.

Here's a picture of my engine, If anyone can tell me where the idle control valve is that would also be a help

still got the problem?

I have suffered from this for along time and just got used to driving with it - makes it interesting at roundabouts!

engine seems to knw it should add revs as it stutters v. slightly before cutting out.

Tried Merc' dealer who after extensive investigation came up with a problem with the throttle slider. This was replaced and problem went away for a while but returned.

Merc in Milton Keynes have no service records of this being a widespread problem on early life vehicles.

Your Mercedes

Both

There is no idle control valve on that engine, it is all controlled electronically.

It is likely a "sensor feedback to main engine ECU (computer)" problem.

Important sensors are Lambda probe (oxygen sensor) and coolant sensor, both providing feedback signals to ECU which then fuels engine the correct amount.

There was a problem with the early OVP relays on these cars and a subsequent new part number issued.

First thing to do is get the codes read and you need to find a technician that can read the early codes and know what they mean. (It is not like the latest OBD set up).

If you are stuck and willing to get across to Berkshire I can read the codes for you.

I should also add that the evaporative emissions system should be checked for correct operation, as feeding back the stored fumes in the charcoal canister in the wing (from the petrol tank) into the inlet manifold, at very low revs, will make the engine stall also - but the diagnostic fault codes will show up that fault.
