I have just bought a 100k miler 2000 E320cdi estate to replace my girlfriends dead K reg E class. The car ran fine on the test drives, but today a couple of things happened with the gearbox:
1. Pulling off a roundabout, I accelerated sharply to pass a slow moving car, and ended up with no drive at all. Pulled to the side of the road, moved the lever to neutral and back to D and all worked fine. My girlfriend experienced the same thing when she drove the car later, under similar circumstances - coming off a roundabout quickly.
2. I have noticed that the revs go up when it changes from 3 to 4. At first this was just when I changed it manually, but then noticed it does it when in Drive - it's as though the gearbox forgot to take its foot off the gas before changing up. All changes between the other gears are fine.
Is this anything to do with the adaptive gearbox I have read about, or is there a fault on the 'box? I had a 2000 C220 cdi auto and never noticed these quirks with the 'box on that (completely different car, I know)
Any suggestions will be gratefully received.
