Don,t know if anyone can advise, but only had my w211 55 just before Christmas, love the car, but am puzzelled about the gear change, in my wifes current C200 and my old w210 E240, shifhting from park-neutral to drive was/is almost instant, but I find on this 55, I have to shift, and wait a least 3-4 seconds before it engages!, its caught me out several times, when I put into drive, hit the gas, nothing, and suddenley leap forward, is this the norm?, and a second question whilst I am here, I keep hearing a pump engage, generally at low speeds whilst manovering, is this the power steering, or do you think I have a problem! appreciate your thoughts

My change is instant from P through to D and into R, as I say it's instant which ever direction I'm going through the selection. The pump niose is probably the SBC.

I would echo both comments above. But the only time i experienced anything close to the delay in engaging, was when i was driving thru London, in stop-start traffic for over an hour (one day the whole place will just grind to a halt  ) I kept puttng it into neutral, and was fine, but after doing that for a long time, it suddenly didn't seem to like it, and took a couple secs to engage and sort of "jumped" into gear (for want of a better description).

After that i either held it in gear, or put into park, and it didnt happen again on the journey.

Hasnt happened since, either from neutral or park.

cheers
Nick

We had a long discussion on this awhile ago, the general consensus was to leave the car in D and either use the footbrake or handbrake to hold the car. This is also the advice in the owners handbook.

Not sure which gearbix you have. If its the 7 speed this is irrelevant but on my old 240 I found that if I switched from D to R after a hard stop (miss a turn, slam on and try to reverse back before any traffic gets there) I would get the same issue - no gears for 3-4 secs. I was fine other than that so I never investigated but if it's doing that all the time, I'd have it looked at.

Lock up only takes place in top gear Eric.

As said the cars should be left in drive unless a very long wait, then its better to turn engine off.
