Anyone out there driven a porsche cayman, have been a passenger this week, in a clients porsche cayman s, and must say it was quite exilerating. It has left me quandering weather to sell my 55, and get a cayman, Iam going to try soughting a test drive one over the weekend, to have first hand experience, but would appreciate anyones experience, or comments. I quite understand, the totally different car comparison, but the experience has left me in a bit of a dither of what to do!

I would never swap my E55 for a Cayman. Maybe a C4S but anything less than a 911 is not a long term thrill.

I've owned 911 (which I threw into a wall....) and Cayman. And the E55 is definitely a better all round car, more power, more finesse and less gaudy. And at £27k, my 4 yr old E55 was a bargain.

One thing for sure, you will find the mandatory annual servicing a rather unpleasant experience for the wallet if you switch to any Porsche.

Remember that the Cayman is just a Boxster with a roof.

Forgive me if any of these are stating the obvious:

Do you want a sports car or a quick saloon? The Cayman will give you a *WOW* when you first drive it, particularly the 'S' but after a while:

The constant noise of the engine may begin to grate.
The lack of boot space might become an issue.
I personally found the seats uncomfortable but then, I have a fat bum.

In addition, you'll have to pay through the nose for any accessories - Porsche are like BMW / Mercedes of 15 years ago - low spec as standard.

However, on the plus side, the Cayman is likely to be slightly better on fuel and is of course a lot smaller.

Thanks for that guys, already appreciate totally different cars, but will go off to the local porcshe dealership and have a look, and whilst I acknowledge the 55 has more power and accessories fitted, that cayman did give me a buzz, and I was only a passenger, (not alowed to drive it, it was the courtesy car for his boxster, in for service), do you think, MB will gicve me an SLR when I have my 55 serviced!

I'm struggling to find the implied drawback of that...

I think the implication is that anything less than a porsche from the 911 stable is an unacceptable compromise.
Nothing essentially wrong or bad with any boxster or cayman.
A boxster is really a modern 924 and the cayman, a 944.
Its privately acknowledged by porsche marketing that the boxster and cayman are just tools to trap and ensnare a future 911 owner.

My business partner has a Boxter and he hates it. He's counting the months to go to the end of it's contract so he can get shut of it. When we go out on business we go in mine because he loves it. Having said that he's going for a Range Rover sport (supercharged) next.

Interesting - all the motoring press reckon that the cayman would be a better Porsche than the 911 if it had the same engine.

Yes. I have read that many times also. However, porsche still view boxster and cayman owners as 911 owners in waiting.
My son-in-law is a Porsche owner and has been ever since I have known him.
He has actually done the boxster-cayman-911 thing and he states that without a doubt the 911 is easily the best in all respects. I have been a passenger in all 3 and as far as that is concerned, the 911 is definately the S class where the other 2 could be seen as the C and E. All are unmistakeably "Porsche" in character but there is something about a 911 that does lift it above its two brothers. in the same way as the C,E & S classes of Mercedes.
Porsche is a bit like Marmite. You either love them or hate them. There seems to be little middle ground.
Mercedes on the other hand is a brand that most drivers would be more than happy to own and aspire too. They are easier to appreciate as they are not so hard core.

If you bought a Boxster S with a hard top, you wouldn't notice the difference and you could pocket the difference in price to a Cayman S.

I took on a Ninja 636 this afternoon from a standing start and wipped the floor with it, there's no way you would do that in Cayman or a boxter.
