While your waiting to get your THIN WALLED deep socket spray plenty of WD40 or similar down there just in case the actual sensor is seized in the engine :)

Well another dry day, new socket here, sensor doused in WD40 for a week.
New sensor and two bolts all ready to go.

The bolt is well and truly rounded off so thought up a plan B, separate the sensor from the foot, remove the sensor, put some duck tape over the hole and sort out the nut with easier access.
It was going well but the sensor is well and truly stuck too.

Twas also brittle, ah well, a new challenge for another day.

My sympathies to those in the business, open to any bright ideas, thanks.

have you got the bolt out ?

if not hit the head a few times to shock the bolt lose, also use plus gas rather than wd40 its immeasurably better at penetrating through the rubbish

if the housing is aluminum you could use a heat gun carefully to warm it up to get a bit more room to remove the old sensor

Not got the bolt out yet. I shall try the shock treatment and soak it in plusgas during the week.
Funny how you forget the basic things as time goes by. Sort of gave up mechanics about twenty years ago but have enjoyed some of the work I have done recently so though I’d do this easy job !!!pah.

I did try putting some bristles of steel (ex wire brush) inside the socket to pad it out in the hope that it would grip if I tapped it onto the bolt.
I shall try the tap the bolt first then the tighten it a nip, another way to break the grip.
Not sure about the heat though, not really equipped to carry that safely.
Thank you

Scary business , me E class took half hour the other week to change the cps . Going to do the CLK at some point , but seeing your troubles I think I’ll wait for next summer when I don’t need the car for a week . Good luck with it all .

Yup, I thought about an hour, especially when I saw that I could get to it fairly easily.

Drilling and Easy outs ‘ll be next, and that ll be a big challenge.

I shall continue to finish this as is a bit of a mess to pass onto someone else, unless I really have too.

Thank you for the continuing tips.

the bolt shouldn't be very tight....
a tap, plus gas and heat should sort the bolt, I think STAR means drill out the whole thing? but then you might have crap flailing about with the TC you need to get out
(easy if you've got a ramp - not much fun at home)

Yep never drilled the bolt, can’t see how it’s rounded off as stated, there not that tight unless the incorrect tool has been used at some time. It tricky drilling and keeping the mess to a min and not damaging the toothed flywheel.

Thank you,
The bolt is tight. I have had a good purchase on it and having thought I’d moved it, I hadn’t. I have a good gripping socket if I can get access to it so will try to remove the sensor. Will spend the next few days applying plusgas to it.

I’m not one to give up and luckily I don’t need the car as have another.

I don’t have a Dremel in my armoury yet.

^ At the very least you should take the day off and run the Dremel down to Gosport.
It's what a moderator should always do for a member in need.;)

Are there sockets on the market that are designed to grip rounded off bolts , it does vaguely ring a bell that I’d seen some before

I have a socket that will grip most shapes, but as said need to be careful not to sheer the bolt when using it. If I can remove the sensor I shall give it a go.
Not heard of Irwins, I know the name from tools but,

As for the Dremel, not sure it would be able to be used as is limited space though not familiar with the tools that can be used. No rush for the road trip Russ, but thanks.

Thank you for asking.

Have been away on holiday for a week. I gave it a good soaking too before we went.
Shall be back to have another good go next week.
Am sure that if I can get a grip on the bolt I should be able to get a turn on it and get it going. As for the sensor, with the bolt gone should be able to rotate it, wiggle it out provided it remains in one piece.

Thinking of trying to tap a suitable sized ring spanner onto the bolt as tight one way so as get get a bit of a turn.
With a spanner I should be able to see that it is going onto the bolt head.

Will keep you posted.

These ten minute jobs eh.
