Hi

Merc 300E - Can anyone throw some light on why my economy meter only goes back half way instead of to the start (left) of the dial when I take my foot of the throttle. It used to but not now.

When I switch off, the needle rests in far right of the dial in the red zone as it should.

Any help would be appreciated.

Regards

As Silver Arrow suggests, it has to be a leak somewhere.

After I changed the air filter on my 129 I will swear that mine is less responsive than before, used to be instant, but now rather slow, but it does go right back, since it is the same system I will try and work it out.

The ecomomy gauge is really just a measure of the vacuum on the inlet manifold.

There are loads take off points, so a leak in any of the pipes will show the symptoms that you are reporting.

I'm with Silver Arrow and Tom on this one.

I think that MB wanted a quick way to check the condition of the vacuum so they put in a gauge. If they had called it a 'vacuum gauge' nobody would understand it, so they called it something else...an 'economy gauge'!

OK then if it works on suction, there is more suction on the overrun than when accelarating so one needs more suction to make the meter read less and that as you all say = a leak, but anywhere on the system

I am going to put an extra tube on mine and suck as hard as I can to make the car more economical:roll:

Think of the saving though.

I woke up at 2.30 am and thought about this, since the meters are elecric and no vacuam goes to the gauge (mine) there must be a unit somewhere with a pizzo electric element and a diaphram where the movement will be transferred to a voltage, still thinking.

Turnip, remember the vacuum wipers on Fords back in the olden days ,this is the reason the wipers speeded up when you were slowing down and crawled to a halt when you were accelerating .Good design feature don't you think. LoL.

With the lousy brakes they had, going down the other side you could see what you were going to hit.
