Hi all

My old 230 E engine Has became thirsty for oil. It eats about 0.5 liters/1000km And it feels little powerless. I have now 141000 km in odometer, but I am not sure if it is true or not. Is there any signs on this car where I can say true kilometers approximately.

How big operation it is to change my old engine to new 16 valve engine.
I have heard that these pre 88 engine has bad reputation.
My car is with automatic transmission.

My plan is to buy motor from germany from local scrap yard and buy all necessary parts same time.
Which parts I should change/take with the new motor.

Or is it just plug and play thing to do.

Other thing is that my car rear has became very noisy. It is keeping squeking in every bump. I checked all joints from rear-end And I couldnt feel any loose on any joint. I putted oil inside the ball joints with injector and needle. and I putted oil allover the rubberjoints. Nothing helped
What normally causes this sound.

sorry my bad english

Hi Oskari from finland

Your English is a lot better than my Finnish!!

First of all I am no expert and I do not want to cause offence, but I think you may be over reacting to your oil consumption problem. Sure it is drinking the stuff but can you be sure it is not a valve sealing problem or are you convinced the power loss equates to poor piston ring sealing - have you had a 'leak down test' carried out. (Do a search on this forum for leak down).

You are obviously an accomplished mechanic to contemplate both a transplant AND an upgrade so Good Luck!

Please let us know how you get on

If when you start the car you get a puff of blue smoke then your valve seals have hardened and cracked. These can be replaced fairly simply in the car. (But block uo any oilways or you could be searching for lost split collets for weeks).

If when driving you accelerate hard and you notice clouds of blue smoke in the rear view mirror (more obvious at dusk in the headlights of cars behind you) then you have excess wear in one or more of the bores or sloppy valves.

A high milage car will certainly benefit from new valve guides and recutting the valves.

For noise at the rear check all bushes on the training arms and anti-roll bar. Also check the condition of your shock absorbers.
