Hi.

I am so pleased with my new little Smart car, Fortwo 2009 Diesel Coupe 0.8 CDi RWD -- 451 799cc 33KW 45HP

I wanted to do some replacement parts and or repairs on it, but there are a few items on the engine I am not familiar with, can you help me with some Id please,
I highlight a fat rubber pipe that comes from what looks like a small heat exchanger/ radiator and goes into the engine somewhere, can you tell me what it is and what it does please.

picture attached.

Inter-cooler for the turbo

Air filter is back left - half to undo the piper work and MAF to get to it - once you've done it a few times it gets easier...

Fuel filter is in front of the drivers side rear wheel (obvious really...) wheel arch liner pulled back and you can get to it

I have taken the fat pipe off and looked inside that and the MAF, it is full of oily road grit and grime, should there be an air filter of some kind apart from the main air filter top left.

That's the turbo intercooler not the MAF

MAF is below yellow arrow - and air filter is the box behind it

Okay, so the air goes from the air box and filter into the MAF then into the engine, so where is all the dirt & grime coming from that goes into the turbo intercooler, is there not a filter for that somewhere, and can the metal turbo pipe be removed without any problems for cleaning.

That oil comes from the PCV valve. The grit is the soot from the EGR.
Quite normal. There is no additional filter.

This is one of the drawbacks of diesel emissions control. Soot from the EGR mixes with oil from the PCV and forms a nasty sticky mess. One solution some manufacturers use is to put the EGR post DPF to remove soot but very few do this.

As long as you don't break anything and are absolutely sure there is no cleaning fluid left in the intercooler then yes.

I am removing the lower tailgate for easier access to the engine bay so that I can clean various parts more effectively, is this something everyone does or is there an easier way of getting to the engine.

When I have done that I am changing the two upper engine mounts, the lower front engine mount, both rear shock absorbers and the rear brake shoes, is there a correct sequence of doing these few jobs in the right order and is there anything I have missed please.

Are these the fuel lines, if so will I have to bleed the system if I take the jubilee clips off and open the system to remove the pipes so that I can access the bolts below.

I have just about removed enough items to be able to get to the top engine mounts, the air box was a devil to get out and I couldn't find any information or videos to help me with it, I seem to have a variant that is not very well covered, If I could have removed the intercooler that would have helped but again, no videos on the variant I have

As I am not used to working on a diesel engine the thing that worries me most is the bleeding of the fuel system, I have seen various videos showing different ways but that does not necessarily advise me the correct way for my fortwo,

In addition I can only see one way of accessing the three bolts holding the top right engine mount on, which means that I will have to disconnect the fuel lines hence my concern about bleeding, can you help with that please.
