Is it possible to remove it so I can see the engine? I hate the swathes of black plastic covering the art-in-motion that is the engine. I mean, you chat about the car to someone, open up the bonnet and it's a large plastic blob. For all the guy knows, I could have a 55 badge and a 1.8 litre engine. :D

No you can't remove it. There is a sensor mounted on the underside, if you attempt to disturb this without permission a van full of Germans will pull up outside your house and bundle you in the back for 're-education' :)

So, does it cough up some error? "Warning: error. Driver is a car park poser." ?

The other way is to work from under the car,it saves taking it off.

I don't think these covers are there just to look good and stop the un-educated masses from tinkering (though that must be part of the reason). They play a big part in noise suppression from the top of the engine (combustion noise and valve gear rattle, etc) all modern cars have to satisfy strict European noise limits when designed and are tested for stationary and drive by noise production. Whether you would notice any differance inside the car if you removed these covers is doubtful but then you would always be looking over your shoulder incase the noise police were following you!
