My eng cut out at 70mph and wouldn't restart. It cranks ok but no start, I called out RAC and he was not able to diagnose but his best guess was the fuel pump overheating and shutting off. Going home on a transporter. The next day the eng would start and I let it idle for 10 mins and all seemed okay I selected drive and within 30 secs it died. I'm not convinced it is the fuel pump on its own and some of the forums suggest it might be the CPS with people who have similar symtoms. Is there anyway to check whether it is the pump or is it the CPS turning the pump off? The car is not driveable at the moment. Any Advice appreciated.

Try the crankshaft sensor first. Only cheap and will go wrong at some point.

oOo

Don't I know that scenario - frightening when on a dual Carriageway and you end up stopped on a sliproad joining it!.

I've just had delivered today from the States a new CPS for my W126. Fitted new fuel pump and other parts but still cut out after getting up to temperature. Still not seen where this thing goes into the Engine. Have read, and contrary to knowledgeable opinion, that its near to crank pulley at front. Looked at rear end and underneath to see if by the flywheel but can't see it. Keep asking where does the other end go to so I can backtrack the cable, but nobody has told me where to look, so far?

Have found the Sensor at long last - definately opposite crank pulley at FRONT END,and t'other end goes into small round seperate plastic unit (diagnostic plug??) by the ABS Unit. Looks like an absolute nightmare to replace at the crank pulley end but maybe from underneath! Just cleaned the face of existing to see wht effect this has.

Sorry it took so long to get back.. been away on business. Anyway still trying to find a cheap CPS. Wish there was a way to confirm if broken. Anyone know what price I should expect to pay for one. Thanks

A new one from the dealer is £77 is the part number above is correct. Thats less than a fill of petrol.

I managed to confirm the CPS by putting a meter across the 2 pins (1150-1200 ohms) and heated it up with a hair dryer, within a couple of minutes it went open circuit. Bargain . New one fitted and car is back on the road. Thanks to everyone for their input.:D
