Engine description no

I own a yr 2000 E285 v6 estate. I see engine descriptions in short form like W203 etc so i surmise that each Merc has different engine variants. Being of geekish pursuasion I would rather like to get a list of these engine types so that I can find out what mine is and what types others are talking about. Does that sound wimpish or anorakish - hpe not but can anybody help/:lol:
