Previously MB's I've driven had a design temp of 87 degrees, and would hold 85 pretty reliably.

The Viano 651 has been very slow to warm. Would rise to 92 and fall back to low 80's when coasting. As the outside ambient temp fell, no surprise, the engine was slower to reach temp.

So I fitted new stat from MB Newcastle. So far it doesn't seem any faster to warm up and now rises to 98 degrees, and falls back to low 80's when coasting.

What are other bods experiences with this engine?

I dont be that far in mine this last 3 months with lockdown and work only 3 miles away. Hope to get a good run over holidays M80. Because you have to select the temp gauge in LCD I dont look at it that often but I will observe it on a long run in the cold when I get my holidays in another week or so. is your heater hot enough? Mines from memory always held in the high 80,s driving but that was in the summer/Autumn.

Kev I guess your asking about the cabin heater. That is pumping reasonable heat into the cab within a few minutes.
The 'aux' heater being the behind dash electric heater element is providing an anti chill warm output within seconds, I imagine as soon as the battery voltage allows.
We also have seat heaters, a must for up here.

The only time the cabin heat gets erratic is sometimes on a longish run. Then it can be over or under hot. But that can be due to a greenhouse effect when the sun shines in??

I monitor engine temp via Torque, the dash gauge is less specific as you know. I guess many don't bother looking.
Torque is useful for seeing when it goes for DPF incinerate, via monitoring of the exhaust temp.

If my situation is normal for the 651 I'm surprised others haven't made comment. Especially as we know that the diesel provides better economy when up to temp. My 651 is still seemingly beating the OM646 for that though, and with extra power available.

My E250 is the same with the om651. If I do motorway only it goes up to temp and stays. But of theres some up and down B roads the temp will fall back and ot get it back up it needs a good kick in the ass. No regen issues been reported and this has been going on for 2 years or so.
