Engine Fan?

Hi,

I just took ownership of a 1984 500SEC. The car drives perfectly and is silent from the inside. So smooth and quiet that sometimes think it has cut out! From the outside however it can be much louder especially a fan sound which can be quite loud.

Is this normal?

I think you have the viscous coupled fan

this can roar a bit when the engine is hot, and isn't the quietest when the engine is cold. Search on here for the carrot test.

I noted similar with a previous lexus - particulaly when hot or when air con was on. The fan made more noise than the engine!

At the peak of summer the 3 fans on the SL make a lot of noise, its handy to keep pedestrians away in our narrow strees in summer.
