Apologies to everyone who has viewed this on the bodywork forum. I have re-posted here. I hope that I haven't broken any rules by doing this.

I changed the engine mounts on my 1990 300 TE 24v a couple of weeks ago. To get to the top bolt of the nearside mount, I had to remove the injection distributor and associated parts until only the throttle valve housing was left on the inlet manifold. I could then undo the engine mount top bolt.
Whilst everything was off, I cleaned all of the parts before refitting. The only new part that I needed was a small rubber hose from the cylider head to the rotary idle actuator.
Everything seemed fine. The car starts well but after 3-4 miles driving, the engine dies. After leaving for 20-30 minutes, she starts up again. There isn't any strong smell of petrol until the air filter intake hose is removed. I have re-checked all the connections and they all seem OK.
Can anyone suggest if there are any other checks I can make before I take it to a mechanic?
Thanks in advance.

Fuel pump or fuel pump relay is my guess.

Can you hear the fuel pump prime when the ignition is switched on when the problem occurs?

Yes. Everything seems normal until I stop at a busy junction (or not so busy) or a red light. Then the engine cuts out. It has happened twice since putting everything back. I can't really take the car out as it is.

I will be re-checking all connections again today. I've had a couple of thoughts about what the problem may be.

1. The cold start valve is at fault. Is there a way of checking it.

2. In the MB workshop manual, there are several references to clearing fault codes after disconnecting leads. I am no auto electrician, but can fault codes be caused even if the battery is disconnected whilst work is carried out?
