My 2012 E 350D AMG Sport has had the engine management light come on today.
The car still drives like normal, but being that way inclined I decided to plug in my OBDII reader to see what codes come up.
Unfortunately my reader was unable to read any codes and error messages come up.

Is there a specific (cheap) code reader that works for my car or am I looking at taking it to a Main Dealer or Indie to get the codes read so I can find out what is up?

iCarsoft MB2 seems to be the weapon of choice for the amateur mechanic.

I have one for the Merc and i recently bought one for my boys Clio and it took me straight to the cause of the Airbag / Serv light fault which was a faulty drivers side impact sensor.

At £110 for the Carsoft MB2, it's not that cheap.

It's about as cheap as they come for something that will read all the modules in an OBD2 Mercedes.

You can try Carly (a phone based app for android). I think results for Carly are very dependent on the OBD2 Bluetooth dongle.

There’s a newer version of the MB2 now , I think £150 ish, still cheap for peace of mind and initial diagnostic

It was £80 , at an Indy, to get the code read on my car when there was an issue with cold starting.

Two of them and the reader will have paid for itself plus it can be resold for around 70% of the purchase price when you change manufacturers.

If you have more than one marque in the household then i would consider the Carsoft CR+ as it does all makes , it is around £40 more than the MB2 but worth it for working on more than one car.

The MB2 has an OBD2 setting which will read/delete codes on the ecu's of lots of other makes as well, I have used it on swmbos Pug.

But the CR+ will only read a subset of the modules not all of them. For example won't read SAM, Door modules, Comand etc but will read engine/SRS/ABS/ESP across multiple brands.

I tried the MB one on my boys Clio and it wouldnt interrogate the car enough to pinpoint the SRS issue so i had to fork out another £110 for the Renault one. Why i didnt just get the CR+ when i ordered the MB one i dont know.

Senior moment , again.

But get it from UK Parts Direct, not Amazon.
They are the official iCarsoft dealers. Not only that, but they have a really good helpline if you hit snags.
Try asking Amazon technical questions!

Having had both the i980 and the MBII, I prefer the easier read of the latter. Just old eyes.

I'm about to buy the iCarsoft Citroen version, but if there's a new model scanner about to be introduced (a la MB) then I'd prefer to wait. Can't get reliable info on this yet.

Just Ordered iCarsoft MBii

Hopefully that will do the trick. And will hopefully also clear the error message on the ML about the driving light being off (when it's not).

Word of warning. The iCarsoft will not work on anything with a 38 pin round diagnostic port. It will only work on 16 pin OBD2 vehicles.

Just picked up the Carsoft MBII from the post office (great bit of kit by the way), and it has told me that I have three error codes. P0546(twice)/P2081

1. Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor High Bank 1 Sensor 1
2. Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor Circuit Intermittent Bank 1 Sensor 1
3. Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor Circuit High Bank 1 Sensor 1

In layman terms what does this mean?
