The wife stopped on her way to work in the C class to let me know the engine management light had come on. The car still drove so I took a chance and told her to carefully drive back home, she was only 10 minutes away. No smells, no leaks anywhere so I drove the car around the block, less than a mile, slowly increasing speed and booted it the last few hundred yards, no problems at all.
So before I phoned the Mercedes dealer I got the handbook out. In the book there is a suggestion that you turn the engine on and off 3 or 4 times if you frequently make short journeys. If the light goes out and stays out there is no need to contact a garage and just carry on. I tried it and was amazed, it actually worked. Wifey took the car to work and messaged me once she arrived that all was still perfect. It seems it pays to read the book before contacting a dealer, I bet that saved a few quid.
