Hello,
I have just bought a Mercedes 608D 1983. I'm going to pick it up, I would like to do an engine oil change before the long drive as it's been sat a while. I tried to find the service manual unsuccessfully does anyone know any links? I need to know what size the bolts are to change the oil filter and open the sump. I will have to borrow the tools, I have never had a vehicle as old - any tips welcome.
Thanks

I think the sump plug is about a 13mm size socket, but if you borrow a complete socket set you should be covered for all eventualities, the filter is cartridge type the filter sits in a housing I think that is also a 13mm socket

Instead of the above action, take a Pela extraction pump with you. Run the engine until it's up to temperature, then extract the oil through the dipstick tube, fill with fresh oil, and drive it home.
Repeat the oil change when you get home, and change the filter at the same time.

You've then done the best you can do for the engine - a flush after a journey, and fresh oil and filter change to start your new ownership. And minimum tools required, without grubbing about trying to remove the sump plug.

That's just the ticket.
No nuts or bolts on the side of the road, no risk of having the wrong size filter & a flush before your final change. Perfect.
(other pumps are available, I use a Lidle special :):).)
Be sure to have enough empty containers for the oil you will remove.

And the biggest benefit is no risk of stripping a thread miles from home.
