I’ve noticed that from when I originally bought the car A few years ago, the position of the temp needle has gone up from it’s original position Fully warmed up engine. Not a lot, not overheating. About the width of needle. There’s water in expansion bottle. New engine oil a few months ago. Any ideas thanks.

Temp should be 87/90. It's possible that the thermostat is past its best. When they fail it's obvious but I've seen them gradually 'go south' before outright failure. And a new thermostat is a cheap and easy thing to replace. Maybe also replace coolant for all round peace of mind?

I consider 88 normal
Mine's at 87 with 92 after long hill, with aircon in 35 ambient. Very happy with that and verified with both cheap and expensive laser thormometer.

But the gauge reads 10 higher. So, never trust 100% gauge or sensor.

Often in car gauges only an indication of trend of ,too hot /cold.
Now you know where 88 is you can judge if you have an issue.

Sounds fine to me, get the coolant tested if your worried to see if its at the right mix. If the stat fails you will that clearly.
If it aint broke dont fix it.

Many modern temperature gauges are electronically controlled to show normal at 80-95 degrees to stop people worrying about them rising and falling.

Older MBs have normal operating temperature at 82 (our r129 and 210 for example) but if the Aircon is on and outside air temp is over 30°C the temperature in the 129 rises to around 90 - 95°C. I'm thinking I may replace the thermostat on the 129 as a preemptive action and give it a full coolant flush and replace.
