Hi all,
My temp gauge has been reading a bit shy from time to time recently. In my experience, mercs warm up very quickly and I'm used to full running temp in a few short minutes. Once warmed, it reads 80 or a notch above and then stays there but recently it's been more like 70. Certainly at least one bar below 80. It does still reach 80 but can take another 15 miles+ to make the final 10 degrees or so.

Is this too low and if so, how hard is it to replace the thermostat on the E270cdi?

I'm a bit surprised really. The last stat I changed was on a Ford CVH many moons ago. On those, the seals would go, rendering the stat useless. All my mercs have always been spot on temp wise - whether on a frosty morning or sitting in traffic in a heat wave! Do I need to change it?

I noticed ours was really cool

last winter. My mechie said I was just being paranoid " they take ages to warm up". after 45 mins of idling and being revved gently on his ramp, and still only 60 degrees, we thought otherwise. New stat and full normal temp reached in 10 to 15 mins on a mixed urban drive. It takes about 20 on a really cold day. This on the cdi of course.
The SL and C280 are not really different, both take about 5 mins to hit the mark, he said tempting fate.It sounds like you may have a failing stat JB

Before you do needless thermostat replacement, see whether the anti-freeze has been replaced and topup. It needs a replacement every 3 years.

Both the ML (same engine) and the C, they can take quite a while to warm up during winter. You get warm air inside the car reasonably quickly, but depending on how your using the car, it may not get to 80 (or 90 when driving hard)! ie. My drive to work is all down hill going through about a dozen traffic lights and the C, after 20 minutes doesnt even get to 60. An idling diesel generates very little heat and can actually go below 80 on cold days.

If you want rapid warm up and you arent doing heavy motorway driving, block off half your radiator, but make sure you only block the radiator.

This is what I used to do, but some poo poo the idea,, I had to in sweden,,my 123 had a rad blind, but owing to modern design its no longer possible to fit them, so I used cardboard.

I even came to the UK with the cardboard still there in spring,,we have a temp gauge, so there are no problems and it makes one hell of a difference to the warning up,,if by chance it got too hot, just turn the heater blower on and it will fall rapidly

aye - do this myself too. U used to cover half the Ford's radiator with a lump of cardboard. It's just that I don't remember the merc having this issue before and it isn't really cold yet. That said, maybe it did and I've never noticed.

Wind Chill, make sure you park your car with its butt facing the wind! Sounds daft, but wind really can chill many degrees below ambient taking that much longer to warm the block. When I had my gearbox problem (wouldnt move out of park) at -38'c, I left the car idling for 1 hour and the engine temp was hardly above 40! A lot of cars down this neck of the woods seem to have Webasto or Eberspaecher heaters built in (roaring jet engine noise as you walk past them) and they are an option on Merc diesel cars!

Also, are you driving the same at the moment, say compared with last winter, ie. more town work as opposed to motorway work!

Simplest way to know if your thermostat is stuck open is to see how rapidly the car heater warms up and compare with another diesel Merc.

Makes you wonder why (other than cost or design issues) they dont put some kind of variable deflector across the Radiator! The best reason Ive heard so far is due to Intercoolers and oil coolers, but surely a Radiator with electronically or thermally operated valves would be a way to go, probably also cut emissions on cold starts a little.

There is radiator screen in higher spec E-class, which varies according to the speed of the car.

On my 1928 RR I had the shutters to open and close as you went up and down hill, and Jberks you must face it you are getting older each year and it does start to feel a little colder each year :D I used to lay on the ground at 1am at -5c and drop a gearbox,,I wait till summer now

8'c this morning, it took the C220 5 minutes to reach 40'c but by journeys end it was between 50 and 60'c, thats after 15 minutes of running (downhill and engine mainly idling)!

It 10 degrees, just popped into Tesco warm up to normal 80 degrees in five miles.

What worry me it goes up to 100 degrees while waiting in traffic jam. How do I ensure the ventilation fan comes on, I never heard the fan turn on for the last 12 years I have it.

However while working at Hove last year saw one of the W202 parked car, the fan turned permanently on even in freezing weather.

100c is OK the Electric fan cuts in.

The fan running all the time is a known issue and listed on a 202

Yeah, it on all the time although it a viscous fan. I am expecting to be on only if it overheating.

How do I fix it if it happens on mind other than disconnecting the battery?

If I ask when it happened it too late, I probably disconnect the battery as a temp solution.

Should it be on or not if the engine is cold?

If it happened in the M1 motorway, where would you expect me to find an Internet, tell me now, so I know what to do.
