Hi There,
Took delivery of my W211 estate E320CDI Avantgarde today. Very impressed, BUT questionmark over economy.

Computer gives average 50mph / 2 hours (M5-M4) / 33mpg. I guess that must have been mixed driving, but I was hoping for better. Is this reasonable?

A related question: when did EU3 become EU4 with these cars. Can you tell from the VIN? I read that there are economy issues with EU4/CDI.
Thanks a million!

My EU3 engine has averaged 33mpg over the last 1500mls of mixed use. The last distance trip I did circa 100mls, M1. M18 and M69 I set the car on cruise at a steady 70 and the result was 42mpg (computer). This is probably the best test to try, if your not getting around 40ish in those conditions I would imagine the EU4 may not be as economical.

Its certainly an interesting comparison.

To average 50mph on the M5/4 you have to be doing well over 80 at times, followed by queuing I suspect. 33 isn't too bad for that sort of motoring, you'd be looking at mid 20's for a petrol equivalent. I see an average of 35 and a regular trip of 41 on the 270 so it's in line pretty much.

You can get mid 40's but you'd need to be very gentle on the throttle, letting it actually slow on inclines and pick up using gravity on the way back down, but with all that grunt, it takes a lot of self control to stay with the little stuff. Did it (only) once as an experiment and had the computer nudging 48 by the time I left the motorway. Also tried a steady 50mph on cruise saw over 50 but who wants to drive like that!

Yes EU4 will be a bit thirstier than EU3 and was drastic when EU4 first came out but the difference is minimal these days and most early EU4s have been remapped so they're ok too.

Thanks for the response. How do I tell if my car has an early EU4 engine and may thus benefit from remapping?
Thx again,
Paul
