Hi All,

This may seem like a stupid question but...

On both my '95 E220 CE and '84 500SEC the oil gauge is basically always at 3. I always service them on time and wouold have regular oil changes done etc. so is this correct? Should the needle not slowly drop between services as the oil level drops?

Yesterday I noticed that when the key was in the ignition and turned to the first position (i.e., before engine started etc.) the oil gauge rose for 0 to 1. When I turned the ignition key the full way the oil reading was 3, is this correct?

Thanks a million,

Les

The gauge shows oil pressure, not level, so it should always read full during normal driving, regardless of the oil level. (obviously if you have NO oil you will have NO oil pressure - but you know what I mean :))

Yes mate, on all my Mercs it has been at about 1.5bar at idle with the engine fully warm. I've seen it go as low as 1bar after a motorway thrash :)

As long as it's at 3bar when revved all is well.
