I am a newbie to this forum so please be gentle. At the moment i have a E220 CDI auto 2001 y reg which i am about to p/x for a C220 CDI auto 03 model. Now this is where you will have to excuse my ignorance, but according to the technical spec the C220 gives less urban mpg than the E220. I would have thought it would be the other way round as surely the E class is a heavier car. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Welcome to the forum. I wonder could it be the increasingly more stringent emmissions controls that newer cars had to meet.

This should not be the case as newer engines deal with emissions by getting better ignition by use much finer atomized spray patterns in the bores.

The New C220CDI is quoted as doing 42.5 mpg on the combined, and 30.7 urban test along with 53.3 on the extra urban

When did they introduce the particle filters?
I remember these hitting mpg quite badly at one point.
I think that all of the 210's and 202's have them, so would that be around 95-6

I seem to remember a big whoha not long after I joined the forum, with buyers of new mercs complaining about poor fuel consumption. All boiled down to the EU4 stuff. EU4 kicked in around 2005 so it tallies.

Thanks for your replies, it just seems a bit odd that the C220 CDI only seems to return about 30 mpg round town, whilst my E220 CDI returns 34/35 mpg.

Fuel consiumption on diesels, like for like has declined as controls have got stronger.

Thank you Hawk,I did not realize that they had that much effect, we get the next new emission regs in 2009

First on Diesel Particulate filters. The E 270cdi I bought in 2004 did not have one.
I can confirm that the A class and B class diesels do not have a diesel particulate filter.
The only vehicles that are now fitted as standard with DPF are the ML and GL 320/420 CDI’s and the S320CDI. DPF is not even listed as an option for other models. The only way you can have one fitted to anything other than the models mentioned is if the dealer does a special request to DCUK.

Economy goes through strange cycles. Crash/safety regs have made cars heavier and heavier over time. The new Golf GTi is about 50% heavier than the original we all knew and loved. Obviously, this harms fuel economy.

In addition, some emissions controls harm economy on like for like engines. BUT manufacturers keep getting better and better at squeezing more and more from engines with new and better or just improved technologies. So over time, there are setbacks and advances. Over the longish run economy is improving. The new BMW diesels are offering major advances in economy and the expected new Merc diesels next year will too.

Thats right Hawk - they didn't do one on the 270 as they were phasing it out, but I am pretty sure that the 04/05 320 and 220 did, in order to get around the Euro IV regulations. The current 220, 280 and 320 line up don't have them again as they are all new engines and so were built EU4 compliant from the design stage. But, between 02 and 05 there was a definite issue with people swapping between seemingly identical 220s and seeing dramatic falls in mpg.

Yes I remember that. Going back a bit further, when catalysts came in, I had a Volvo estate and you could choose it with or without the catalyst. On their figures the catalyst used 15bhp, IIRC. Would be interesting to know what kind of mpg we would be getting without all these controls.

How could i find out if the 03 model 220 i am thinking of buying has a particle filter as i don't really want to suffer a loss of mpg on a smaller car, although i suppose i could try a veg oil mix if it has.

Well despite a few misgivings about the fuel consumption i went ahead with the p/x and picked up my 2003 cdi 220 elegance last night. The mpg seems to be about the same as on the E class and although it's early days i am very pleased with it so far. I bought two 4l cans of mobil 1 from costco today and will get my mechanic to do an oil and filter and diesel filter change next week, i will also run some injector cleaner through it. The only thing i can't quite sus is the automatic air con. I know how to switch the air con off to economy mode but wondered if in automatic mode it stays on all the time:confused: Thanks for all your advice....Nige
