Exhaust help please

Hi

Just bought my dream car - two weeks in am experiencing a rattling noise from the exhaust. Went to well known exhaust/tyre centre and by just banging on the exhaust with their fist told me it needed replacing - can they tell by doing this?

I am told two cats on my SL 320 R129 need replacing can anyone advise on best replacement for it and recommend where I can get part? Am in Bromley, Kent.

Hello and welcome, you are looking at £1500 from MB, many of us have cut them open and removed the CAT from the lower boxes and weld up gain, they still pass the MOT as the 2 upper CATs remain

I had a stainless one made for my Audi at Longlife Exhausts in Vauxhall, London for a third of the cost of the main dealer, so worth considering as it has a lifetime guarantee. They can also tune it to you likeing. As for telling you without even looking underneath i would get a second opinion, and welcome to the forum.

Another little tip about cats --not many people are aware of --your existing cats contain rhodium and are worth around £50 each at the current scrap value.
This is handy cash towards the expense of a new one-- or you can just leave it at the fitters / garage -we just love collecting them and cashing in they pay for all our holidays.

Very good tip, i got £120 for my 2. Most people just leave them at the garage not knowing.

One of the lower CATs rattling is a well known thing on the V6 320, The impossible thing is to tell which one it is rattling as they are both so close together, on the open road you do not hear much, as soon as you get into a town "tinkle, tinkle" and everyone stares at you
