This is my first post and I am no mechanic, so please be gentle.

I have a C200 compressor W203. The exhaust sounded as if it was blowing, but local garage tell me that sound is coming from the front and is possibly the manifold. They suggested Mercedes to look at but would need to remove engine to get at the manifold. Firstly, I can;t imagine this is the case and can I look at the manifold easily myself. Secondly, could this be the cause for the air mass flow registering faults?

Please help as I am suspicious of people who earn money from making a job more difficult than it is.

Thanks for the replies. I am in Northampton, are you able to advise me the most local good Indie? I haven;t got a clue, nor it seems did the garage as to what the problem was. I was hoping that I could have a look at the manifold myself to see whether this was the problem. Where else in the exhaust system from the engine end could be blowing??

The mainfolds on them have been known to crack along the welded seem. it can be welded and doesnt need replacing if this is the case.

Will the crack along the seam cause the blowing I stated. Will this be obvious to an Indie repairer and what would it cost to repair approx. Is there any way I can check this myself easily?

Get the car up on ramps, remove the plastic trays from the bottom of the car, and have a good feel around for air chuffing out with the engine running. Watch you don't burn yourself.

My exhaust rusted through on the seam between the cat and the middle pipe.

Many thanks for your help. I shall put on my wife's oven gloves and go exploring for escaping fumes.
