Explanation of Mercedes Fuel Injection?

Would someone mind explaining to me what type fuel injection system Mercedes uses in the fuel injected W124 chassis engines? I'm a fairly Mercedes owner and I find this very interesting. There's no typical fuel rail but that large distributor.

I'm just really curious to learn about this system as I have never seen the likes of it before.

The system used was the Bosch KE Jetronic with a few variations, early models were Jetronic with Lambda then KE 3 Jetronic upto 1989 followed by KE 5 Jetronic from 1990.

You can buy a good book called Bosch Fuel Injection and Engine Managment from amazon for about £13-15.
