I was fortunate enough to have a passenger seat drive last week in two cars I have long admired. Both owned by my brother in law residing in Abu Dhabi, he has a Ferrari California and a Porsche 911 Turbo, (along with a Bentley Continental and Maserati and an unknown 4x4) Lucky guy, but he worked hard for his dirhams.

The Porsche is a hugely capable car with blistering acceleration and uncanny roadholding when pushed. Nothing like the early 911 Turbo's that tried to kill you if you got too enthusiastic with the throttle pedal. I was impressed.
But the California is a whole different level. That engine note when the revs climb, the seating position and the shove in the back when accelerating. It demands to be driven quickly. I know I'd have speeding points within days. And its such a head turner. I know given the choice I'd choose the Ferrari.
There is a lot of money splashing around in the UAE and this is one car that appears to be admired by all. Mercedes don't cut it there anymore. Far too common like BMW's and Lexus.
How I forgot to take photos before they were parked up in the garage don't know, but here they are. Rubbish photos of two splendid cars.

Love the photos. Were the rear lights on the Ferrari round ?
Also, how does one assess the roadholding as a passenger..?

Yes, round rear lights IIRC.
I can only compare how the car took fast corners compared to other models I have been driven in.
I know full well previous 911's would have broken traction at the speed we were travelling. Been there done that. It was scary.

My dream car is a 550 or 575, as you say there is just that thing about the prancing horse that makes them special

Porsche owners brag about how many miles they have on their cars, Ferrari owners brag about how few they have…;)

Porches are bomb proof. A Ferrari owner always has 2 said cars for when one is the garage - explains the low milage

Prob on porsche, bore score and daft internal bearing design. If buying one needs be checking paperwork for resolution of that
I quite like the 996. Esp wide body there are a few not silly money. I pretty sure I can fix near all issues. It's parts costs that scare me

Don’t rag them until they’re fully warm (same as any engine that you care about…) change the oil regularly and they’re great.
996 is still cheap, the “broken yolk” headlights really put owners off unfortunately.
I’m biased but the Gen 1 997 is probably still my favourite. Don’t like the look of the 991/992 as the rear end and lights just don’t work aesthetically.
Engine rebuilds aren’t as criminally expensive as headlines would leave you to believe and a lot of parts can be sourced cheaper than a lot of mainstream brands I’ve found.

I’ve had heater fan fail and replaced 6 ignition packs - they ~£90 fitted when I had the first one done. I replaced the others on a service.
Alternator wasn’t charging - £1,200 from Porsche, £600 from Bosch or £80 to an Octogenarian to fully rebuild mine… guess what I did…;)

Standard faults really but not expensive.

I also replaced the main battery lead as they go black from damp and lead to poor starting when warm. The cable was around £80 but engine out to fit it… I had the engine out for other work so got it done at the same time.

I have a good Porsche specialist that look after mine. It’s not getting used as much as it should but it starts first turn and looks so nice I’m keeping it. (Also my insurance is just £190 for it…):)

I’ve always been a big fan of the “prancing pony” but being a “NEW car” guy (not a fan of pre-farted seats ) they have always been outwith my budget. My son got his Taycan Thursday & so has beaten his dad to that one. I do wonder if we can call an electric one a true Porsche but it looks awesome & I’m sure will drive & handle beautifully.

Whilst I also like new cars, they’re only new once and even when they are someone else has sat in it before you. I’d much rather someone else take a bath on depreciation.
As they say there’s no such thing as an old Porsche just a new owner.

Me too :) I like to buy a 3 year old or slightly newer with the lowest mileage I can find. 50% or so depreciation gone :)
