Hello to all. Can anyone tell me if there are differances in the final transmission ratios on r129's? Is it poosible to change a rear axle from another car? For example, a lower ratio for aceleration, or a higher ratio for motorway cruising? has anyone done this? What is envolved? Thanks!

You pose a hard question here, very hard to get info on the ratio's, If you go for exceleration, your top speed will be lower and the speedo will be out, what ever way you go. on most cars the torque is set at a useful point.

I have specified alternative ratios on my vans from the factory and have not had a problem with this. In my case I went from the stock 1:4375 to a longer 1:4.111. This lifted the theoretical top speed on the rev limiter(downhill with a tail wind:shock: ) from about 94mph to around 100mph when the rev limiter cuts in. on the 316 there is plenty of power and this has been fine but on the previous 311 the gearing could have been a little high as it was a struggle to wind it up into the 80's but as most travelling was done at around 70mph anyway this wasn't a problem and gave more relaxed motorway driving and I think probably better mpg (but I didn't have anything to compare too, so cant quantify this).

Incidentaly by changing the ratios I matched what is fitted to the panel vans as standard while the chassis come with the lower ratios regardless of whether they will be flat beds, or in my case, huge luton boxes with tons of wind drag.
