Hello and welcome,

The OM651 engine isn’t the best Mercedes have made unfortunately. This one looks like it’s been looked after with 200k on though

Just from my experience check for oil leaks - common area is sump, switch over valve and oil cooler and $$$$ to repair. OM651s been fitted to many many models over the years so servicing and parts are usually pretty easy to come by... reckon they are the best looking wagon / estate variant of a sedan. Also worth looking around from an MY13 onward as they had the 7sp+ transmisison - this one will be a 5sp.

If it start fine, everything works ans there no leaks of any kind then go for it.
Take it for a drive and listen for any abnormal noises.

Good advice above - especially checking for suspension knocks, timing chain noise on start up and oil leaks. If it’s got a faultless MoT history why not buy it - from the one photo provided it looks like it has been well cared for. One caveat though make sure you keep £1k in your back pocket for the unexpected.

Is there a service history?

Also see if the waterpump / thermostat has been changed - don't want these engines running cold so check when you drive its running above centre on the temp gauge.

That's pretty impressive mileage and shows how well the engineering is...... that just over 320,000klms! I'm about to hit 68,000 miles so hopefully get to this milestone!

I like the look of the optioned AMG bodykit and wheels on the wagon - alas i don't have these options....

Better estates out there for that money imho.

That's a lot of wear / miles on components and mechanicals unless they've been replaced over the years,

You could get a non mercedes estate of similar vintage with 50k or even 100k less miles on it.

But if the service a parts history is lavish....

I’d agree with that there are better examples and better estate options available.

High mileage is not an issue so long as the basic design is solid and then the cars been highly maintained throughout not just scheduled services.

The battery seems to be undercharged/ duff starter. There does not seem to be timing chain noise on start up, but that only happens on a really cold start, so if that was started earlier it is not an indication of the state of the timing chain.
Is it ticking over at 1500rpm.?
Injectors seem rough. Many of the earlier cars had Piezo injectors. They were a disaster. Most were replaced by solenoid injectors, but not all. Some were repaired Piezo injectors.
Look at the top of the ECU and see if it says "solenoid"

Obviously the extensive service history will have a bearing on any decision, but unless it has had a replacement diesel filter housing, Water pump, thermostat, inlet manifold, injector replacement-if Piezo-timing chain replacement, emission components, plus suspension wear parts I would not even consider making an offer; notwithstanding the fact that it should be ticking like a mouse's heart to command anything near that price.

Yes it does and if you do not get it sorted early- slight rattle for a short period on start up, especially after an oil change- the guides will be damaged and it is then an engine out operation as opposed to a simple enough operation where the old chain is attached to the new chain, allowing the new chain to be pulled around the gears.
