It does seem odd to have to pay attention while something else does the driving I can see that being tricky.

But long term I only see it as a good thing to have self driving cars. I am sure there will still be accidents, but just less of them.

I won't miss driving, at my time in life I find it rather tedious.

If they rely on sat nav data then they won't be any good down here.
There is a very long stretch of the A4067 that has a 40mph limit that the sat nav insists is 60. For quite a distance the sat nav insists you are doing between 50 and 60,when you are actually doing 40. Perhaps it's a mix of trees and hills interfering with the signals, but it's always the same. If a self drive car followed the data it would cause accidents, not prevent them.

I don't think self driving cars rely on SatNav.

I love driving! Always have and hope I always will.
The Shooting Brake was great with all the gadgets, Distronic, Lane Assist, Autonomous Braking etc., but I still like to drive myself.
When I no longer enjoy it or start to become a nuisance to others I'll stop but I'll probably have an powered wheelchair by then!:geek:

This means that in an extreme case the car could come to a halt in the fast lane of a motorway as Blue Cruise does not steer from lane to lane!

Sounds like a disaster to me.
Whistle
merc had this lack of attention and park in the same lane 5 years ago.....

I’ve done a few miles over the last month here and in Spain, used pilot assist a bit more.

Not great in Spain as the speed limit changes too often so you might as well just use the throttle.

Discovered that it’s ****** brilliant in slow moving motorway traffic, no need to touch the pedals at all unless you come to a complete stop when a quick poke gets things moving again, very relaxing particularly when I think back to manual cars of the past with heavy clutches.

I can't think of anything worse that queueing in traffic in a manual car .....
One of the major factors of me switching to Auto back in the early 2000’s - nearly 4hrs of stop start traffic on the M4 back to Wales due to a bus fire. Left leg and hip knackered

You want to try Distronic then, it will bring you to a stop and then set off again without touching the pedals at all.

Does it do the steering as well?

I’m writing from 1100 miles from home, the journey down was mostly on French motorways which, as we know, are good for a relaxing cruise.

I used Pilot Assist for the first 850 miles or so, worked flawlessly, speed adjustments were fine and steering seemed better suited to driving on the right. The right thing might just have been my perception.

What I realised was that the economy took a stuffing. The car is a 2023 Volvo XC90 B5, just 3500miles so run in but still new.

I was at just under 30mpg on assist, I took full control for the last 250 miles and saw 35mpg. Average speed the same and kept at 135kph where allowed, 95% Autoroute.

I did find myself drifting up to higher speeds with it off just as much as I was driving slower than 135kph in the twisty/hilly bits of the Alps.

In my view it is at it’s best across long slow moving sections of motorway traffic, it was superb on the M25 for example.
