just done coventry to manchester and back. returned 47 mpg on the way home. thats a clk 270 cdi avantagrde. heating on, not the best driving conditions either. remarkable figures i would say. was getting 24 tops out of the 3.2 tt! as low as 16 (wince) and about low 20's on good days.

Welcome to the world of the modern diesel engine. It took me a while to adjust to the fact that my next car was going to be a diesel. After, V8, V6, straight 6 petrol engines the idea just did not appeal.

The clincher for me and probably a lot of other people was the introduction of the turbocharged, common rail injection, multi-valved engines. I've owned mine for about a year now and I can't praise it enough.

The E320CDi engine is responsive to low throttle and the turbo boost comes in just where required at a low 1800 rpm. The fuel consumption is on average 30-40% better than petrol and the performance is sensational. When the engine is warm you wouldn't know that you were driving a diesel.

I hope you enjoy yours as much!

.... and the really good bit is I don't have to fill it up very often. The 70 litre tank gives me an average range of 500+ miles

i am impressed by the power too. going from a v6 3.2 such as the tt was something of a change, but i am happy with it. the build quality of the merc outstrips the audi too. tt's are really niggly.

Recently swapped my sweet E240v6 for a rumbly E270CDI and have to agree. My fuel bill has dropped from £90 per week to £65, I have got used to the rumble and actually quite like it now and the performance is excellent if I can keep those wide rear tyres from spinning.
I got a bit disapointed yesterday when she was showing 24mpg, but the I had to remind myself that the way I was driving, I doubt the 240 would have done better than 14!

ah but

I can get 33mpg out of the C280 s6 and 27 mpg out of the 500SL V8, both very, very petrol. and that's not hanging about either.

True, and I got 36 out of the E240 on a long run, but never close to the 45-50 I've had out of the 270!
The 24 was after several 0-80 1 mile blasts down a local ring road dropping off and picking up the kids. So pretty much as bad as it could get from an economy point of view.

ah yes, kids

ours are forcing me to consider an estate, probably an E, maybe a C, given the amount of kit they need to get from A-B. I have even thought the 320 CDI could get a look-in. It's a shame I can't get all of us and the kit in the SL, as the kid's love it ( I take their coo-ing and giggling to be approval).
Needless to say, I fancy the E430 or C43 AMG best of all.
Come on you lot, buy my SL and give my kids the chance of a motoring holiday.
I doubt I would have any better figures myself in those conditions. My daily grind to work sees me knocking out 27-ish in the C280, and the week I used the SL coincided with some of the biggest hold-ups I've seen this year, and that came out at 19 ( not bad for standing traffic). Never mind blue sky thinking, what about some clear roads.

I've gone the opposite direction, from a S320CDI to a E320 Estate...petrol costs are higher, but my petrol motor cost £7k less than the equivalently specc'd E320CDI.

Now our little one is a little more grown up, I'm looking to get back into a "fun" car. Problem is that £30k (or so) buys a lot of car these days, and there is just too much choice i.e. older 996 cab, newer Boxster S, newer SLK350, older SL, XKR cab etc etc.

Just to keep on topic, I'm averaging 24mpg out of my estate - used to get 32mpg out of the S-Class.

Had the same quandry- Wanted a good spec, recent E320CDI but the prices are just silly, so i went the other way and compromised on a 270. The 270CDI is a bargain compared to the equivalent 320CDI. Not quite as mad admittedly but still very lively. I did consider a max spec 320 petrol too but at 25,000 miles per year, the fuel bill was getting a bit silly, though if I was still doing 8k per year, I suspect I'd be the proud owner of a 320 petrol too!

our 85 500SL and leaves you change for something for the wife and mountain bikes for the kids.

Problem for me is that it needs to be my daily driver, or I'd need to buy a second car with all the additional costs that entails...that and the minor point that my company wouldn't approve me using it as my main motor...note I didn't try sell you mine?! You interested? :D

probably

a bit beyond my budget Brett, but thanks for the offer.I used the SL as daily a couple of weeks ago, and very calming it was. Shame about the traffic though. I have noticed I have no trouble getting out of side roads when in it.

Fuel bill for a C230K

My weekly fuel bill is around GBP27.00 - 28.00. This is based upon a daily round trip to work of 38 miles. I regularly fill up with Shell Optimax which gives better mpg. I put in around 60 - 61 litres (69 litre tank) each fortnight at a cost of 91.9p/litre, about GBP56.00.

I can't really complain with these figures because it approximates to the consumption of my previous car, a 2 litre Toyota Celica GT. However, whilst I wouldn't call the Merc' a true sports car, it's performance is at least the equal to the Celica at legal road speeds and considerably better at atobahn speeds. Not bad for a heavy automatic with 30 percent more power and 70 percent more torque thanks to the blower.

I have adapted my driving style to match the Merc'. This probably accounts for why the fuel consumption is no worse. Driven hard the Merc's consumption would probably fall into the low 20s. On a long journey I would expect appreciably higher efficiency, at least high 30s.

REGARDS Phil
