Ihave recently bought a 1987 300e. It doesn't burn oil or lose coolant. It gives about 20-25 mpg if you drive it at 60-65 mph on the motorway. In normal driving and at 80mph on the motorway it does about 15mpg! When I load the engine at speed (3000rpm) plumes of black smoke billow out. I've had the car electronically tuned and taken it back but the garage can't seem to find anything wrong.

Is this how it's supposed to be or is there a fault as I suspect?  Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

Cheers ,

Steve Pook.

FUEL CONSUMPTION 300E

Hi,

I've had that engine on a G-wagen and everything except the black smoke sounds right. However, the g-wagen is a lot heavier and has barn-door areodynamics.

(There's not much to tune "electronically" on a KE jetronic fuel injection system)
