Can anyone tell me preferable from experience what the mpg should be for the above for both urban and combined miles?
I'm only getting 30 mpg for combined and thought this would be far higher

Also if I switch the traction control from S standard to W winter will this give better economy?

I have driven this car with a very light foot

Sounds like you need to check out the engine. As I recall, the 'official" overall MPG is 37.

My 1998 C250TD auto estate has averaged 38.36 mpg over the 56,293.4 miles (out of 86,000 from new) over which I've measured it. In fairness my mileage is probably biassed towards out-of-town motoring - I rarely sit in city traffic jams. I don't particularly pussyfoot around to achieve this, just drive normally.

My wife regularly drives from Bath to Cambridge (mainly on motorway and dual carriageway) and does a few local miles whilst there; she always seems to do over 40mpg for the round trip.

I don't have separate figures for town mileage.

As I understand it, the S/W switch is not actually the traction control (that's the ASR (anti slip/skid regime?) switch). The S/W switch tells the gearbox which gear to start off in, and how soon to change up (from memory, for W, it starts off in second, and changes up as soon as possible to reduce the chance of the wheels losing grip on snow and ice). As you imply, the W setting should give slightly better mileage; I've had a play with this, and if there is an effect on MPG I've not managed to find it.

Hope that helps.

With my C250TD auto estate I average around 36-38mpg overall, the best has been 45mpg and the worst has been below 20mpg (had some fun that day!). For regular commuting to work, about 5 miles in slow traffic I struggle to get 26mpg.

Admittedly I am a bit dissapointed, my friends have Golf, Audi, Passat TDi's and they all average 46-56mpg. But then the Merc is nicer to drive and much quicker.

I'm getting no worse than 38 and I've seen 45 mpg. I'm very happy with that as the BMW Compact TeDiouS I had previously struggled to achieve 43 and I'm in a car that's quicker, larger, more comfortable and an automatic. My journeys are 50% motorway, 50% cross country.

I'm also very happy with it's response when accelerating to pass slower traffic driving cross country.

Re your MPG
I have 1996 model on 112,000miles.
I get about 33mpg mixed driving; winter setting (this should help because the turbocharge will cut in later) and judicious application of the right foot.
The cargo area is usually loaded with door samples, so this needs to be taken into account - together with age/mileage.
I suggest you use a fuel system one shot cleaner, Change the fuel filter and at the same time adminster the one shot cleaner to the filter housing. If you are careful you won't have to bleed the system. The one shot will clean the injectors, pump etc. of carbon and give you the best chance of of improving fuel consumtion.
You might also consider changing to fully synthetic oil if you are not already using it. Run the engine up to full working temperature and apply a detergent cleaner, following the instructions that come with the product. Replace the oil filter and oil and then change the oil again after 2000 mile and thereafter at 5000 mile intervals. This is necessary to scarify the engine of all the gunge that accumulates over time. It is quite expensive, particularly if you are using for the first time, but will give you a healthy engine and enhanced performance.
Hope this helps - keep us posted as to how you get on.:?

I have a 2000 E320 CDI which i use for work and cover approx 3000 miles a month. Average 38 mpg. Most of my driving is motorway in northern england & scotland where the traffic is not too bad and at approx 80 mph usually get 40-42 mpg. the most i have ever had was 46 mpg taking it very steady and avoiding using brakes etc.
