Can some one please tell me whats the fuel consumption like on C220 CDI (2002Reg). I checked it out on mercedes web site and its suggest that I should be able to do round 34MPG, but on my dash bord its shows 25-26MPG.

Hello and welcome,, it might be an idea to fill the tank and check after you have re filed again to work out the MPG as an actual figure. If your runs are short journeys maybe it is as low as it shows.

Some more answers will come in

This is an excellent place to start - a real number that cuts out any doubt about the accuracy of the trip computer. Some of these are pessimistic, some are optimistic and some are spot on. You need to do this sort of test to decide in which group your's falls, and it costs nothing. Bear in mind, the bigger the sample you take, the more effective your answer, so why not aggregate all the fuel you use in 2,000 miles. If you set your trip meter at the outset, and don't reset it until you have finished the exercise, you will get an all over average "since reset" which will smooth out any day to day variations.

I have a newer W 203 220 CDI AG automatic estate. I generally expect around 36 mpg overall, but will hope for 10% more than that when the engine has run in properly, so say 40 mpg average by 40,0000 miles, in round figures. I live in a rural setting, so town dwellers will almost certainly get less, but how much less?

Lots of factors affect this. Cold weather, short journeys, heavy slow traffic, underinflated tyres, vigorous acceleration, high cruising speeds, heavy loads all contirbute to low figures. The reverse, or management of these issues all help improve your score.

It will be interesting to hear how your research goes and what tactics you use to make things better (you can always improve).

Good luck - keep us "posted".

I use my 01 c220 as a Taxi and i keep a carefull check on the MPG. I fill the tank every week and check the mileage and going on the "brim to brim" method it is returning 30 mpg. The computer says 33.6 so obviously 10% wrong. But it must be remembered that most of my work in local around town.

I've just gone from Glasgow to Aberdeen & back, sitting at about 60mph the whole way. The trip computer shows 50.1mpg there & 51.5mpg for the return journey.

The computer usually shows an average use of 29 to 30mpg though, so all the town driving really kills your fuel consumption.

Unlike the previous post, when filling brim to brim, my fuel consumption works out at 2 or 3mpg more than the trip computer shows.

Mine must be one of the VERY pessimistic ones. ;)

a useful site for fuel figs

Welcome,
I find this site useful for fuel figs, register & you can specifyin mpg instead of l/1oo km.

http://www.spritmonitor.de/en/

As others have said .......it all depends on....

As an example I use to get 45.3 MPG on my c 200 c sport,(auto) however it spent much of its life at sensible m way speeds.

We used that method in Sweden, a Swedish mile being 10km

I,ve only been getting 25-28 mpg lately. Have been running around locally so would explain bad mpg.
Went out for a 30 mile "round the block" drive this evening as i wanted to see a good mpg for once. I achieved 47mpg with av. speed of 30mph. I did drive extremely carefully.
Doing 30-40 mph on a road in traffic the mpg was very slowly increasing.

Leaving home in mornings, hitting heavy traffic instantly for 50 mins then motorway for 10 miles gave 36 mpg.
the reverse trip gave 46 mpg.
What i noticed here was at 1c the engine started at 16mpg, took forever to go up in traffic and slowly incresed to 36 at the end of the trip
the return was motorway straight away, hittin around 45mpg then the heavy traffic which very slowly pulled mpg down, hitting home at 46.

On setting out the figure will always be low - cold engine. Once up and running the average will still be affected by the earlier low numbers, but will improve throughout the journey.

2,000 rpm gives peak torque but no wastage, so if you can keep it there or just below you will get good performance (fuel economy) without having to go at funeral speeds.

I filled up £15 and I only managed to do 75 miles (local) is that good. I was expecting to do at least 100miles.

Assuming that diesel is currently around £5 per gallon, that is 25 mpg which is consistent with your previous estimate. The larger the distance and the amount of fuel you can use for comparison, the more accurate you get.

Others have said 25-30 mpg around town, so it sounds as though you are in the right zone. The challenge is to get the other factors right to try to improve the figure.

just done an airport run, 180 miles return. running at 70 mph on motorway got the car up to 51mpg. got a little lost when i got there so drove around a bit but stayed around 50 mpg.
Return journey with 3 up and luggage at 80 mpg was still getting 49.1 so happy with that...

Alex's comment about engine temp is important here. I usually start the car and leave it running for a few minutes before leaving the house ... [I'm in a position to safely do that!] and this helps the engine heat up. Was always told that this is an important practice to get into the habit of with diesels in particular.

My runs are non urban typically ~140 miles in length and I regularly get about 55 mpg reported in the dash which is close enough to reality. I cruise at about 75 mph using cruise control with eyes on the road whilst listening to a selection of personal music and generally enjoying the view of that mercedes star sitting on the bonnet.

I have always heard the opposite to what you have then.
start the diesel then drive albeit gently until it is warm enough, dont leave it idling !
Boat diesel engines are often started and left idling for ages before they are finally put in gear and also seem to have a very short lifespan compared to a diesel in a car. the claimed reason for this is the idling diesel ends up with glazing of the bores, then suffers lack of compression, leading to non starting.
Maybe this could be a debate similar to the one about brand new engines, either run them in gently as per hand book (more for bikes nowadays) or thrash the living cr*p out of them which supposedly ends up with a better engine.
am sure both of the above can be debated either way.
