The only result is that your wallet is lighter. Check out Mythbusters on Discovery Channel or BBC2 sometime as I'm sure they will repeat the episode. Some of it is on youtube as well

These things have been around since the 60's, they never did anything then, and they don't now. At least the wild claims about the savings are not as bad as then. There was one in the 60's called an exhaust aspriator, a little sprung loaded valve the you screwed into the exhaust manifold, the blurb that came with it said, start the engine and you will hear it working, sure enough this little valve went sput, sput sput at idle, anything over idle where the manifold suction is nil it did nothing, but there were folk out there that claimed a 30% saving.

the broquet fuel catalyst

worked pretty well on my old beemer, when we lost the lead out of fuel. It did make the engine idle more smooothly, and gave a slight increase in mpg. Over the 70,000 it was in the tank, it probably paid for itself a few times over by that alone. and it meant I could drive unleaded.

my friend bought one of these things & i put it in my last car (almera) & then it started performing crap. drinking more petrol. i think it was red-x or something. Or maybe its because my car was getting crapper, still I told my friend off. He said it worked on his car.
