Hi all,
This question sounds a daft one to ask online as its a sound but here goes (I really don't want to go back to the garage again).
Just as I feel I can stop worrying about this car something else happens. My car has developed a new noise from the front end that is only evident on idle (Ican only narrow it down to very front n/s). The noise is a 'chink rather than a knock' and is random. It sounds metallic but not enginey. I'm thinking air or foreign object in water pump or pulley bearings? Any ideas...Just had no1 injector replaced and a new thermostat. I am tempted to leave and see if gets worse but would welcome any advise.

I don't think so SAM - I know that sound and hope that the indie reseated the head but if it is that time will tell... It sounds like the radiator fan hitting something lightly and randomly ( I don't think this is it but am trying to explain the sound)

Use a length of 1/2 inch hose as a stethoscope, hold one end to your ear and move the other next to each bit of the engine, when it gets loudest that's where the sound is coming from.

Take care not to tangle the hose in the fan etc.

I would say its the injector seals because mine used to tick like mad especially when pulling away from start and you were beside a wall or something . I say this because when i replaced my injectors and new seals the ticking stopped ,engine was well quiet ! But now 4 weeks or so later i couldnt have cleaned the seats enough because ones blown again and the annoying tickings come back!:( Anyone got a good way of cleaning the seats without taking the head off? God the thought of tackling those thin injectors bolts again :(

i have the same problem

hi, i have the same problem, i tried the small funnekl on a bit of old water hose
and it is coming from the top of the thermostat housing, it sounds like a loose valve, a steady knock/clatter, i have been all over the engine and no other noise is present apart from the normal engine ones..
so i guess this is something to do with the thermostat..
i have had this noise for about 6 months, and it is only now getting slightly worse. i was told that it could be the timing chain tensioner, but i had that on
an old 190E i had, and although a similar noise, this is not that...

the small funnel on a hose is a great tool.....
not done mine as it all appears to be ok , no over heating, drives fine and fast
also the noise does go as you rev, but does turn into a faster clatter as you rev then dissapears whilst on a rev
which i find confusing, didnt know thermostat had anything inthem to clatter
course i could be wrong, any one any other idea

2002 SL500, 216 CL500, all fully loaded
By just removing the serpentine belt,,this would eliminate anything on the tensioner etc and start the engine.

If from the front even with the belt off it could be timing chain, or rockers if coming from the top
