c180 kompressor 2009
Hi all,
This is my first post and my first decent car. I drive an automatic mercedes c180 Kompressor 2009 with 69000 miles on the clock. Today i reversed out of my drive popped the car into forward depressed the gas pedal and got zero response from the engine, it was running just not responding to the gas. The abs and engine light came on briefly then went off. Popped it back into reverse and nothing. Floored the gas pedal in forward and the engine cut out. Switched everything off restarted after 10 mins and everything was ok. I am going to take it to the garage but was wondering if anyone has any idea what the issues could be, im new to these cars and i dont want to come across that way at the garage. This is my second car the first being a Fiesta. Thanks guys

Failed throttle position sensor would be my first guess.

Thanks guys, lets hope the transmission hasn't gone. Im going to check the transmission fluid later. Garage can't check it over till next week. Hopefully i wont have to do too much overtime! Its really odd though it seems to be working fine now acceleration etc seems normal and there's no odd noises.

Sorry Mick, bit more drama than I should have stated- when I say box gone I’m thinking component within, not the whole transmission.
Is your garage a Mercedes specialist with STAR diagnostics do you know? Without that they will struggle to diagnose properly. There will be a ‘stored fault’ showing and without that your issue could reoccur - without diagnostic a mechanic may simply drive it and declare no problem, as you are finding now.
Another area to check would be the MAF, again it will show on diagnostic

Craig's suggestion would be the favourite I suspect. No response from throttle could be little else.

Ian.
Could equally be a failed throttle actuator - these cars have a fly by wire throttle with a cable from the pedal to a sensor which then operates the throttle butterfly by a motor. Either the sensor or motor may have had a 'moment'. If there was an EML on as well it would suggest throttle body end, other wise pedal end.

Either way it should be recorded for STAR to find.

This is true, my failed TPS (actually two failed TPS in tandem) didn't bring up an EML.

There are also two TPS in these - the one attached by a cable to the pedal and the other is internal to the throttle body - kind of a "This is whats being asked for", "This is what I'm giving you" feedback system

On mine there are two parallel TPS in the throttle pedal assy. The "This is what's being asked for" is the mean of the two sensors outputs- at least, that was what was explained to me when I started sourcing. Makes sense. One had failed completely and the other was working intermittently so I was getting very slow pedal response...

Hi everyone, the garage is an independent Mercedes garage, they do have the diagnostic equipment. Not much choice in Teesside there's only two main Mercedes specialist places.
Thanks.

Prestige more than likely there is also Merc Spec and AutoKlasse. Never heard of Simon Robinson though, I will google it. Once its fixed I will post what the problem was, cost to fix etc.

Hi all,
Just an update went to the garage and no faults have shown up on the Star system. We discussed likely causes as listed above aswell as the mass airflow sensor, but since no faults have shown up he discounted those. He also checked the fuel pump which was operating in the acceptable range. As nothing was showing up on star he decided to discuss the issue with some colleagues but again to no avail. The only thing he could suggest is that the transmission fluid and filter may need to be changed as the car has done 50k +miles and has not been changed. Diagnostic cost £48. Does not seem much that I can do other than drive it and hope the issue does not happen again.

If the engine is not reving up ,,then the problem is with the fuel injection system, and no way a problem with the auto box. One thing you an check is the pedal box they have been known to come away from the fixings on the body .
