Just realised I need a GB sticker on my car for my drive across europe.

Magnetic ones wont work on the CL becuase the rear of the car is Ali and the book is plastic and there is no way in sticking a sticker on the back of the car.

Can I get away with putting the GB sticker in the back window or are they real sticklers for it being to the left of the the rear number plate?

Back window is fine. Left of the plate is not mandatory AFAIK

Many are vinyl self adhesive, Halfords sell them.

PRobably the easiest option, are they ok in Italy, France and Switzerland?

should be. theyre in europe and use the same strips on the number plate (with their own local initial code on them, naturally, instead of GB)

They are indistinguishable from a EU plate which is legal everywhere. For some reason EU plates technically need to be on front and rear even though if using a sticker is only on the rear. Not a problem though as they sell them in two´s it´s 1min each to fix and mine were still stuck to the car 4 years later.

Had some of those plate stickers fitted on my 2 cars ( fronts dont have them as I was pikey and fitted to the rears only) and have made countless trips without anyone even noticing...

Depends if you want that or a window sticker

Oh and if you use the channel tunnel not sure the plate recognition stuff will work on your plates by the way ( been to Belgium a few times with lotus mates and invariably someone has plates which aren't picked up and causes a right headache!

Just to be pedantic, the stickers shown in this link are not strictly legal. The euro symbol is required to be between 40 and 50 mm wide. These are only 35 mm.

I doubt if even the french are likely to be going round your plates with a tape measure, however there are other ebay items that do conform, here for example.

Oh, and by the way, these are only valid within the EU. Switzerland is not an EU member and jobsworths at some Swiss border crossings can go out of their way to make this clear. A standard GB plate might be a good idea if you're travelling there.

If you have to apply a sticker I always used to apply a small amount of Vaseline onto to paintwork before applying a GB sticker - It always held perfectly and was easy to remove when I got home without leaving any residue or marking the paintwork.

I've been driving into mainland Europe for many years and regularly to Paris. Never had a GB sticker or number plate type and never ever been questioned.
I remember the days when at the dockside we'd all be painting our headlights yellow with that stuff from out of a small bottle, planting black deflectors on the headlights, placing GB stickers yada yada yada. The Europeans make the laws and the good old Brits are the only ones who follow them.

I haven't bothered for years.

Mic

I forgot recently, but relaxed when I saw the number of other UK drivers who had also "forgotten". We were not troubled. Next time I will take some with me just in case.
