The other day I went over a road curb and the belt came off. Then the gear which was in 1st locked and I cant shift any more, even i tried hard but it did not release. I drove until the engine over heated and had to call for a tow truck to tow it back home. I am just curious is there a safety system thats locks the gear, if the belt snaps. Maybe someone may know about this.
Model w124 Manual 5 speed. Thanks

Is this the fan belt ? Don't see the link between this and the gearbox. Think that the bump has disturbed the gear selector mechanisim.
You might be lucky and just have to take the gear lever off, and realign the selectors. There's usually 3 (to accomodate the three planes of up/down ) and looks like (given the jam in first), it's come adrift and not connected. It might be a gearbox out job to reslove, though

I agree with you, but it did happened and the next day i tried and it was stucked too. Then I started the with the clutch pressed and the it started. Switched off the engine it was stucked too. I tried lifting the lever and it released and all was back to normal. There was no damage to the transmission at all. Only the oil sump was damaged and the belt snapped because the radiator got stucked to the fan.

I think this has just happened to me...

E320CDI (W210)

All was fine...
Accellerated from a roundabout - did not change gear...
turned around and came home (5 miles) at 3-4000 revs...
On the way home the lights came saying to visit workshop with battery/Alternator...
Power Steering went off..
Then I heard some 'orrible noises....

When I stopped (and swapped the family to the 420SEC) I had a good look...
The Fan Belt has been SHREDED!

AA Man won't fix
Awaiting tow to my Garage :-(

What are your thoughts that the gearbox is fine?

Hopefully, the concensus will be that it's just the belt and the gearbox will be fine...

Cheers
Peter

NB - I was on the way to go and look at a V280 to replace a Volvo 850AWD with a dead Headgasket - We need bigger seats.
So from a 'safe' setup of 3x cars for 2x drivers - we are currently left with 1x car :-(

Edit - Just re-read - my problem is different - BUT with searching and reading other posts, it does seem like the battery was dying, locked into 2nd, and then the belt fully broke...

Here's hoping that a replacement fanbelt (and maybe battery) is all that is needed, rather than a fix/replace to the gearbox...

Cheers
Peter

When your fan belt goes, you lose the water cooling, to drive 5 miles with no cooling is asking for trouble.

I kept an eye on the temp - did not rise significantly - With being the CDI it hadn't warmed up fully by the time the problem occured...
Thanks
