I have a 1982 300d turbo,and a 1983 300sd turbo.
My 82 is a daily driver.
What I want to know, is it possible to change the gear ratio
so that I turn less RPM's at highway speeds?
They are both auto trans.
At 70 mph my tach is reading 3100 RPM's.
Do these motors have the grunt to turn slower and mantain a steady highway speed?
I do all my own work by the way. And will attest to the dependability
of these cars. 360K on the 82, 232K on the 83.
The motors, and transmissions have never had to be repaired.
Good maintenance is the key.
If anyone can advise me on a practical solution I would appreciate it.
I do want to maintain originality, without after market overdrives, etc.
Thanks,
James

Your Mercedes
S class
You could try going up a size in wheels and maintaining your current tyre profile size
