I have recently purchased a W140 S500L Mercedes 1995. It has a 5 speed auto box fitted and has a strange problem, which is related to changing gear, the lever will not go lower than D, at this point it won't move across to 4th and down to the lower gears. Can anyone help. The rear head rests won't stay up either.

The problem hopefully should be in the selector part, but this involves removing the whole center consul. it is possible that something has been jammed into the gate to stop the lever from moving there, for there has been the odd car that can lock up, when the other gears are used, are you going to do it yourself.

Hi Malcolm, firstly many thanks for the prompt reply, I am sorry about the delay in responding this is due to only having internet access at the weekend at the moment.
In answer to your question regarding fixing the problem, the reply is yes I intend to solve the problem, so if you can help by telling me how the consul is removed I would be very greatfull.
Regards Andy.
