Gear shifts out of park when the brake pedal not depressed.

Hi Everyone,

Anyone know why i can shift out of park without depressing the brake pedal?

Is it something to do with the shift interlock? And\or are there any fixes for this?

do you have anymore info on that please like location and i take it you don't mean the brake light switch

It's the two part switch at the top of the brake pedal - 1 part does the brake lights the other tells the car the brake pedal is being pressed.

I did notice a lot of play on the auto gear lever. brake lights do work just tested them

Sometimes the Locking Mechanism can fail within the Selector itself. It has been known for people to remove it rather than replace it..... I had a w203 that was like this, or was it one of the 208's..... - I just learnt to live with it.

NB: When it fails you cannot get it out of Park.

The brake lights switch is different - yes it's in the same physical switch but just because the brake lights work doesn't mean the other side of the switch is working.

I think this is a real safety issue. I might strip out the gear selector and have a look at the play issue and check the switch on the pedal.

If we're talking the gear selector in the middle on the transmission tunnel, then my Omega had the opposite problem. The would not come out of PARK .... on that occasion it was the brake switch (which was also a double contact n/o & n/c switch) that had failed but the locking solenoids themselves would also fail

That's what parking brakes are for...

Doesn't it effectively self test as the ignition is cycled?

I wouldn't say so. Auto's never used to have this set up, it's only come to this side of the Atlantic in relatively recent years.

Even in the '60s there was always something to depress or move side ways etc to move from P into R. I think this is a real safety issue. Far too easy to nudge that lever back when not intended.

Agreed with the need to push/press a button to shift the selector, but do we need to press the brake pedal too?
My brother's auto BMW required you to press the brake pedal to start the engine .... why?
And a lot of manuals require the clutch to be pressed to start them, which you could say was detrimental to the crank's thrust bearing.

I always depress the clutch pedal when starting a manual car - it takes the gearbox loading off the starter.
