Hi everyone! My name is Sandhu and I am new in this forum. I got an E240 (W Reg-2000) last month and have been driving it every now and then. I started the car today but could not shift the gear from P. I know almost next to nothing about this car because I have never owned a Merc before. Could someone please advice. Thank you.

Hi Sand and welcome,

Sounds like you need to replace the brake light switch, about £10 from mb

Thanks a lot SAM and Malcolm for this prompt and somewhat relieving diagnose. I pray that is the problem, otherwise I would think that I am in for some real trouble!
Sorry if it is too much trouble to ask you whether I should get it done at an authorised Merc service centre or get it to any indie merc specialist. The other thing in my mind is to actually get it to the centre:???:
I suppose my learned and vastly experienced seniors could enlighten me on this.

Many thanks again.

You can change the switch without MB ever knowing.

If I can find a how to do it paper, and its simple, do you fancy doing it your self,,100s have done it themselves.

There is the possibility that this is not the fault, but lets wait and see

There is a push flap below the D which you can push a bic pen into, this will release it from park!

Simon, I have not done it yet. I am waiting for Malcolm to try to source for the paper before I take the next step. Meanwhile am still figuring out on how to fix it with regards to getting someone to change the part or getting the car to the workshop.

Sandhu.
Have you not tried this method yet? As quoted push a bic pen or pencil through the small aperture next to position D on the selector with the engine running and this will allow you to select the gears! ;)

Thank you very much Malcolm. Thanks Sam and Iain for the bic pen tip to shift the gear. The long and short of it is that the diagnosis given by Sam and Malcolm was spot on! I nevertheless took the car (after being able to shift the gear) to the workshop and they put the diagnosis box thingy on ( I think they tend to do this often, don't they?) and the mechanic confirmed my suggestion to him that it might be the brake light switch. Got it changed and now car back to normal.

My sincere thanks and gratitude to our learned seniors! Mucha gracias!

Thanks for the reply - the car in france has an older bor (98 on an r I seem to recall) and does not have a bic pen hole. Any ideas or shall I tell him to try the switch? MB in France are very unhelpfull btw.

It's not a hole but a little spring loaded flap just a little larger than a pencil.

It will be there!
