Hi
I have a w211 e270 cdi.
It has just had a gearbox rebuild.
I now have a couple of problems.
One is the fuel econ has dropped from 44 to 38.
Secondly under about 50% acceleration the car has a judder/vibration which is quite noticable.
Just wondering if anyone knows if this could be linked to the gearbox or if it is a different problem
Thanks

The main problem was the car was very jerky when pulling away, and clunky. The torque was cracked and the bearing was jammed on the shaft.
What is the valeo you mention ?

The valeo issue is where the radiator leaks water into the gearbox and damages the the torque converter in such a way that that it vibrates and drones when pulling lightly.

Cars affected was the 211 up to the 30-09-03

If this is within your year of build I will give you more info and leads

Hi
Yes mine is a 52 plate so guess it falls into that. Am I doing more damage driving it ? As the gearbox rebiuld and torque convertor are only a week old could they be damaged ?

Thanks for your info.
Just wondering if I have the radiator problem on my car which caused the gearbox to go. So could the initial problem still be there and I have not fixed the cause of the problem yet?

Sorry for the delay in coming back on this.

This fault is well known by MB what happens is that the radiator leaks into the oil cooler for the gearbox, not a big leak but enough for the glycol to cause the torque converter to judder

This repair that you have had must have been done by a non MB gearbox specialist

I think that first thing in the morning you must ask the garage that did the repair if a glycol test was done.

Normally the gearbox is flushed out and a new rad fitted with a white circle on the oil cooler section, it would make no difference driving to the garage

Thanks for your advice, as you suggested the problem is the radiador leaking.
My local merc garage have the car and the repair is underway.
I have appealed to merc for goodwill but no joy so far.
Thanks again
Gordon

Please bare in mind when you get onto MB this is not your fault and you could not make it happen, goodwill has been shown to everyone else that I know with this problem

This is a manufacturing fault, making the car not fit for the purpose for what it was intended

Not terrible but enough, I hope that some offer is made, as it was not of your own making and you were not given the choice of having a new Rad to prevent this from occurring.

Just an update.
Nothing from MB, they say the mileage is against me, 125k in 4 1/2 years is too high. I have had a few emails bounce back and forth between me and MB but they wont budge.
So all in an expensive repair, £1200 gearbox rebuild then £1400 at MB dealer to do the radiator and flush gearbox. ouch !!!!
Anyone know of a good MB indie in Aylesbury for future ?

Still not as good as i thought. Have now run the car for about 1500 miles, still have a intermitent judder, although minor I know its not right.
I have learned a lot lately about gearbox problems on this age of car.
My one concern is unbeknown to me at the time, I had the gearbox rebuilt with a new torque convertor, then a week later I discovered the rad was leaking coolant into the gearbox so this was replaced and the gearbox flushed. Could the new torque convertor have been damaged with in a week ?
The main problem now is a small minor judder, and I cant get the mpg above 38, when before i used to get 44

I do not know why the firm that rebuilt the box did not know of this problem, and I do not know where you stand on this.

Yes the new torque converter would be damaged in a very short time, as it is the glycol that damages the friction plates.

It can still wear itself in. It also appears to me that the firm who rebuilt the box miss diagnosed the problem to start with
