HI All

Just spent a fun evening under the car trying to trace an oil leak. The area from the propshaft end of the gearbox back is covered in oil. From what I can see this is almost definitely gearbox oil. The sump looks to be fine, the most likely culprit is what looks like an electical wire entering the end of the gearbox to the left and below the propshaft. This is sealed by a rubber gromet. The other end of the wire goes into the bodywork next to the gearbox. Anyone know what this is and if it is likely to be the source of an oil leak?

Any help/experience would be greatly appreciated before my wfe starts nagging about the oil on the drive!

Thanks

190e

hey, i had a 190e that was ****ing oil out around the top of the torque converter and many other places on the gear box. It was a matter of replacing three seals for me. The front main seal, selecter seal and another seal. All done for a very cheap price. Id say its as simple as a seal.

Thanks for the feedbak Josh. You are probably right, I should just take it to a specialist, but it looks so easy!! I am pretty sure it is the rubber gormmet around the wire entering the back of the gearbox that is leaking. If I knew what it is and how to fix it, I could save the money I would have spent on garage charges and spend the money claning the drive!

Thanks

Andy

Thanks for the advice. I did get the garage to change the oil and filter last service so it is possible they over-filled it - and they claim to be a Mercedes Specialist!. Shame I don't live closer to Birmingham.....

If it was overfilled, where is it likely to leak from?

Thanks for your help

Jonathan,

Which specialist was it........I see you live in Berkshire, as do I.

Were they based in Reading?????.....I only ask, as I recently took my car in for service, and the work was very poorly done and very expensive!!!!

Cheers

The specialist was John Griffiths in Caversham. It is possible that the box wasn't overfilled but it looked supect when I got it back from it's service. If it was already leaking, they certainley didn't point it out. I also didn't feel confident that the car had recieved anymore than a basic service, i.e. the added service I would expect from a specialist. This is my first experience of them and I am considering going some where else next time.

Any advice/experience you could share would be appreciated.

Cheers
